TL;DR If you bought a camera from a pawnshop and found pictures already on it and had a means to give the flash drive back to its original owner, would you?

Backstory:
Ok, I guess this is a minor morality question. Here is the situation. I was forced to purchase a digital camera for one of my classes today. So whenever I need to buy electronics that I dont care about the quality or longevity I typically opt to save money and go to a local pawn shop.
So I pick up a Fugi 8.1 MP camera for 20$. In this camera was a 2gb SD card. I get the camera home and partook in one of my favorite pawnshop purchase activities in looking to see the goofiness the last owner left. (because inevitably no matter how much they try to avoid buying stolen items, it happens. Do you really think someone would sell something that has personal IDs for game consoles, or Photos of ones self before deleting their own traces?)

Anyway, I started viewing the photos on the camera and it was mostly stuff you would expect, Pics of the owner, pics of her girlfriends, doing the typical posing by sticking their tongues out at each other, holding alcohol bottles and posing in semi provocative positions, then the more traditional stuff like family photos, coworker photos, etc.

Again, I dont think anyone would purposely sell an item that has pictures of themselves in less than ideal circumstances without first deleting their personal traces. What bothers me is that the Coworker pictures inadvertently pinpoints where this girl works and even supplies a phone number to her place of business and it is a relatively local company.

Now I already know what I am going to do, Although the not so much of a prick side of me wants to do the honorable thing and reunite the memories to their owner, I already have reformatted the drive because that "meeting" and gathering information about a complete stranger would be incredibly akward, Stalker-y and there is the possibility the person would see it as me being the one who stole her camera in the first place (if it is indeed stolen)

So.. what would you do. Would you be compelled by your good nature and work to give the photos back? Would you just delete the photos and not deal with the hassle? Or would you do something more nefarious?

I'd just put the memory card in an envelope and send it to the address of the company. Easy.

I wouldn't give it back.
I honestly don't care enough about something like that to give it back.

Well if it wasn't too much trouble, I'd find out how the original owner was and send it to them. If it was too much effort, I'd delete it.

If I could find a way of giving this theoretical guy his rightful property back, sure. Whack it on a CD or summat, look the guy up, send it via post, maybe ask for a little bit of payment for repatriation if it's a lot to send it.

Family photos? Give it back.

Do as Nimcha suggested.

My mom lost all the photos of her 50-year-birthday because the camera was stolen two days later. We won't ever see those photos again.

I don't know what family photos were on that camera, but get them to the owner!

Frankly, I would have formatted/deleted everything on the card immediately rather than nosing through someone else's memories for entertainment. Since that's one of your "favorite pawnshop purchase activities", I assume we're not seeing eye to eye on that.

You said you don't care about how long the camera lasts, right? I'd use it for the class, then look her up. If it was stolen, you can give it back. It'll cost you $20, but you'll have already gotten what you needed out of it and probably net you some good karma.

It all depends.

Is she cute?

Honest answer: Just delete it. Kind of creepy for you to go visiting/sending stuff to people you saw in a pawn shop camera.

I'd have sent it back, saying "I bought this in the pawn shop and found your SD in it."

Then vanish before she can get mad.

I had to laugh at this. Personally i would proberly look at them and then delete them. Don't get me wronge i wouldn't want to look at them to stalk her but maybe she has some artistic photos they could be worth keeping. I know with a crappy camera like that she proberly wouldn't have any artistic photos but it's worth a try. There is a lot of hidden talent out there. If it were me delete them and forget about it.
