The intelligent ones are good,, but the ones that are just: [protagonist's] thoughts during... suck men's dangly bits.

I'll let you have a read of mine - it's not conventional fanfiction, but it still classes as the same sort of thing.

Yes, most fanfiction is utter rubbish, but some are not.

I speak as a fanfiction writer, but I've only created one. Street Fighter caught my eye, and I thought I'd join the party by making something. It started out as a simple project in a senior class, and I kept working at it.

I think fanfiction is a good way for burgeoning writers to practice the craft and get some practice with the emotional aspects of putting your work out into the world... or realize that writing is not for them... or live forever in denial... or have an outlet for their creepy fantasies...

Hold that thought...

It depends entirely on the quality. The vast majority is utterly abysmal, and I fail to see how it gets an audience, however small, when you can get books for a penny on amazon.

The only fan-fiction I have read is Cupcakes, and basically my opinion is "NEVER AGAIN".

Fanfiction is awesome. Nothing more hilarious than a good old fashioned, badly written fanfic. Example:

Now tell me, is that not one of the best things you have ever watched?

I write and read fanfiction as well, and I will admit that most of it is crap, but there are a few out there that are really well written and engaging. You just have to sift through the mountains of shit stories to find the good ones. Usually once you find a particular author that you like you can track down other good stories and authors through their favorites, homepages, yahoo groups or in fic suggestions.

im reminded of the horribly offensive edition of majora's mask with the Freelance Astronauts when Taxidermistpasta began reading random fanfics he had bookmarked (oh god). I think if i read them in a old ladies voice they would be awesome.

But yeah many fanfics are just made by people who are either terrible with story and writing, or just Fujoshi in one way or another, If theres ever some that complimented the cannonical story of a game, show, etc, i wouldnt say no to reading it though

It's fun to write, and fun to read if you find the good stuff.

It makes you want to cut out your eyes with your own fingernails if you find the bad stuff. Some people should not have access to a word processor.

I think I've offered this opinion at least 5 separate times now on this forum, so I'm jazzing this one up.

Hell to the Yeah.

Fanfiction is bad if it's poorly planned. Crossovers? NO. One of my friends was asking me all sorts of questions about Halo so he could write a Halo + Naruto crossover fanfic...KEEP THAT SHIT SEPARATED AT ALL TIMES.

You want examples of professional (or contracted) fanfiction? Read the Halo novels, Mass Effect novels, or Splinter Cell novels.

Anyone bashing fanfiction clearly hasn't read Repercussions of Evil and should be slapped in the face.

As a concept? It's fine.
In reality? It usually is horrific.

The biggest issue I see is the over-use of terms within the topic. For example in a game related fanfiction, frequently using slang from the game.

Example:

"Master Chief duel wielded two SMG's and spray fired a couple of Grunts."

As opposed to:

"Master Chief crouched down and picked up an extra sub machine gun, with one in each hand he fired in a wide arc to decimate a wave of Grunts."

Fan Art on the other hand can be horrific, but there is also some amazing stuff.

This is a real problem for fanfiction. The only fanfic that ever gets recommended to people is the 'hilariously' awful or utterly degenerate stuff, so people read that and assume that the millions of stories are all like that.

It's akin to saying you won't watch any western movies because you saw 2 Girls 1 Cup, or you won't read any western literature because you read Twilight. The worst of the worst is not even close to representative of the whole.

Is it this?

And fanfaction, if written well, isn't that bad. ...Shame that it's not often.

"Aang and Team Avatar are invited to Hogwarts for a mission from Albus Dumbledore and to have some fun! Will Team Avatar and the Golden Trio solve this year's puzzle to stop Voldemort from getting the Sorcerer's Stone?"

This thread made me go see just how bad some fanfiction is. To be fair I found one about incest in Kingdom Hearts that also made most of the characters 13, probably to up the creepy factor. So at least that crossover kept it tasteful.

Then I pity you, for there is some truly great fanfiction out there. Unfortunately, the one I'm thinking of was taken down because the person forgot to say that he didn't come up with the premise and some dipshit reported him for plagiarizing.
There's a shitload of awful fanfiction that gives the remaining 10-15% a bad name.
