Fan Fiction is fun. It gives people a chance to have fun with the characters. The only problem I can think of is if one person writes a bad Fic, your opinion of the media surrounding the story might change.

Also, if it's a show or movie it might be hard to capture what the scene would be like. I would want a cool Fan Fic of any show or cartoon that has been animated quite well. That would be fun.

Most of it's terribly written, but even if there was some with adequate English, I don't like the idea of fanfiction involving canon characters. If they make up characters to set in an established world, I guess I'd be alright with that.

It's incredibly idiotic and stupid (Final time people: guys CANNOT get pregnant!) but...well, people can write it if they want provided no profit is made off it.

I've found and enjoyed reading many fanfiction stories. I can confidently say this because in the communities(ie the certain shows, and games that I love) that I pull my stories from they more often than not good

A small portion is damn good. A large portion is forgettable. A small portion is goddamn awful. I trust that you are capable of forming your own opinion on the matter.

When you read some good stuff, check out that author, and any other authors they recommend.

Also, it is free.*

The first really good piece of fanfic I enjoyed was "Kid Dynamo". It featured a new character joining an existing group, but avoided a lot of Mary-Sue-isms, and was just an enjoyable read. Took the existing characters in some interesting directions, had some great turns of speech, entertaining plot twists, and has a permanent place on my hard drive.

Don't know who said it, but "Fanfiction is a culture's response when it's mythology is owned by corporations."

I don't write fanfiction, but I do read it. And my opinion on the matter is pretty simple. What's the harm? What's it matter if someone writing at a publishable level (I've seen a few fics like this) decided to write their own version of Harry Potter, or, on the other end of the scale, if some horny teenager wrote some abomination filled with nothing but sex and a poorly strung together sequence of words that don't qualify as a plot?

It doesn't hurt anyone. Hopefully it brings some pleasure to the writer. And maybe it even finds an audience in people who liked the same show, or book, or whatever, and wanted to see the same thing the writer did.

I like to think of Darth Revan, from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, as a woman for instance, since that's how I played her. I've read a few fics written with this in mind. I'll admit only one was good but so what? It didn't hurt anyone. It entertained me. So, why the hate towards fanficiton?

Its largely inoffensive hobby for many fans of many different mediums and an interestingly difficult creative outlet depending on how close you want to stick with the canon.

I'll echo sentiments already expressed: Sturgeon's Law is very much in effect when it comes to this particular element of writing.

I'll credit it with keeping me from going totally mad during a rough patch in high school and for some reason I doubt that I'd have become as good at writing as I am without penning the odd piece of crap and having a smarter man tear it shreds. Although once I got to college, professors took that role with original fiction I'd penned (which was equally crap).

TL;DR - Its a harmless time waster if you're into that sort of thing.

I faik to see the difference between fanfiction, and authors who novelise games, movies, etc. Except that the later is actually worth reading and not a pile of 'Did...did I really read that right?"

Personally, I don't have much of a problem with the concept of fanfiction, it is the writing itself. I will gladly read a Halo fanfic that is a million pages long, as long as it is interesting and written well. otherwise, off it can fuck.

well i often go on fanfiction and read some of it when i was board but i have one problem "people who think that some gay in a video game when there not" i mean look on fanfiction.com the most popular game writen about is kingdom hearts yes. At first i was like wow lots of people like kingdom hearts but then i find out that most of it is random pairings. Don't get me wrong i don't mind gays but there is some thing wrong when a 20-something year old man trys to have sex with a 15 year old boy.

Well I remember reading a fanfiction series about WoW. The writer just used the universe and came up with new characters and everything. it was very tongue in cheek humor and alot of inside gags. Best one I remember is when a Paladin said to the undead main character: "Go throw yourself into the Twisted Nether!" and he calmly repleyed "Been there, done that, got the breastplate, didn't work."
It was called Recognition I think.

OT: As long as it doesn't take itself serious and doesn't do it just for the weird sexual matchups, I think it can be a very fun thing.

Fan fiction is pretty much terrible.

Wait, hold on, let me walk that one back a bit.

FANDOM attracts some pretty terrible people. Seriously, fans can ruin damn near anything good.

Fan fiction, in turn, empowers these fans by giving the illusion of creative control and voice to some of their creepy-ass urges or ideas.

So fan fiction is pretty much terrible, not because of something inherent to it, but because it's generally written by people who are themselves pretty much terrible.

Most of it's crap, but there are exceptions. You'll find them easier to come across if you know where to look, I usually try to read stories about less popular characters, because, since there's less to go off of, the anther had to of had at least one original thought in their head, enough to form an opinion about a character nobody else talked about.

A lot of it's good for a laugh though...

I dont like people who actually put it out. I dont care. Just as I dont think anyone really cares about mine. I dont actually write any of it, but I do have my own stories in my head. Any "fanfic" I do though, usually works within a lore, as opposed to altering it. For example, I have a complex story within The Elder Scroll games, but instead of making it that perhaps my character goes in and slays Ocato and destroys Mehrunes and rules the world...all the stuff in the games happens with some added context.

I hate it with a passion. I have yet to come across anything that is written above a 3rd grade level.
Tell me your fandoms and I think I can change your mind. Especially if you're a Browncoat. There's a doorstopper length Firefly continuation that will blow your mind.
Fetzenfisch said:
Its ridiculous, embarrassing and most of the times even too bad to be laughed at.Its just a mass of reasons why stupid teens shouldnt think they are able to write.
You, give me your fandoms. As a fanfic writer, I'm willing to hunt down fics for people (if we even have one fandom in common, if not, well, that makes it kinda hard).
TheYellowCellPhone said:
I hate it with a passion. On one hand, I completely understand why someone can write it -- maybe to expand on the lore of the original story in a "oh, I hadn't thought of that" way.

On the other hand, it usually freaking sucks. Hard. I have never run into good fanfiction.
You too. I'm going to dispel this hate as much as I can.
Jamboxdotcom said:
I suppose it's possible there's good fanfiction out there, but i've never seen it. It's usually written by people for whom all language is foreign. If they do have a firm grasp of language, they still usually completely miss the point of the source material, essentially sticking their hands up the asses of the characters and manipulating them like crude, childish puppets.

Fanfiction is like videos made in GMod. Almost all of it is complete and utter shit, but there are a few gems.

Unlike Gmod videos, I have yet to come across these gems.
I'm pretty sure that, as you've been quoted, you'll have read the rest of this post. Fandoms.

Maybe they should redirect their creativity to something more productive, like writing an original novel or not writing fanfiction, or perhaps getting a job.
Wow, stereotyping. Fandoms?
nukethetuna said:
Mixed feelings, really. Most are garbage due to bad writing, some are garbage due to mindless author self-indulgence, there are probably a couple good ones, but even those feel like a waste when someone with actual writing talent could write their own story instead.
Unless it's a Firefly continuation. Then it's so worth it for them to make it.

im reminded of the horribly offensive edition of majora's mask with the Freelance Astronauts when Taxidermistpasta began reading random fanfics he had bookmarked (oh god). I think if i read them in a old ladies voice they would be awesome.

But yeah many fanfics are just made by people who are either terrible with story and writing, or just Fujoshi in one way or another, If theres ever some that complimented the cannonical story of a game, show, etc, i wouldnt say no to reading it though
Fandoms?

That was tedious. Ok, anyone who's a Browncoat (Firefly fan) who got quoted, go here. [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4099993/1/Forward] Everyone else, please reply.
That wasn't a proper answer.

Mostly i just despise the term 'Fanfiction'.

And the fact that 90% of it is crap but if you're willing to search there are some pretty good pieces.

Fan fiction is like youtube.
