I find the game more challenging than the typical open-world game, which don't tend to be difficult at all. On normal difficulty I've died a fair number of times, because I've blundered into situations I hadn't adequately checked out and I've often found myself fleeing from situations that spiraled out of control.

Stealth AI seems to be a bit smarter than the Mr. Magoo AI of most stealth games, with enemies that are easily exploited at rest, dangerously observant in search mode, and tenacious in fight mode. It's easy to kill from stealth, but fairly hard to stay stealthy.

Wading into fights is survivable only because of the rather liberal approach to healing (you can effectively have health kits in triple digits), but even then it's easy to miscalculate and die before you're able to heal yourself.

It might not be as challenging as the FPS of yore, but since it's not a linear shooter, that's only to be expected.

The only time I ever really get my ass kicked is hunting predators with the bow and arrow. I'm not a fan of the syringe system except for the basic health one ergo, I consistently fail to utilize the Deadly Hunter shot.

I'm glad I picked it up on pre-order from Amazon, because the compound bow was a bit easier to deal with than the regular one. Really hard to get in close enough to hit them, but not so close they attacked you.

I can't say I bother with many of the syringes either. I keep a good supply of green and amber leaves for med kits and enemy/animal detection. Most of them don't seem terribly useful (Nature Boy is especially pointless given the ease of finding plants), while a few of them feel like Cheat Codes to me.

I find it like any other game on normal mode, one thing i will say is that the difficulty does jump a little when you run into the heavy armored guys on the 2nd island but even there not hard to kill when u know what your doing.

It was easier than killing babies with axes. Just lob rocks everywhere till you disable the alarm, then stab everyone in the teeth. Didn't even need bullets.

Edit: Still quite fun though.

It was challenging enough for me since I'm not good with quick & accurate mouse movements. I probably died over 100 times in the whole thing.

The final sequence however, was a death simulator. I couldn't get through it until I lowered the difficulty to the lowest setting, and even then I was at 1% health before I just scraped through. It was ridiculous.

Good ridiculous or bad ridiculous?
Well, for me it was bad ridiculous. If you're a fan of retreading an obstacle where the only challenge is moving your mouse quickly and accurately enough to click on the little men shooting at you, I could see it being good ridiculous. That kind of difficulty doesn't interest me.
