I know I'm speaking to a minority here, but I would really like to know.

Mine would probably be 5, I felt it had the best characterization, the right mix between gameplay and plot (with an amazing plot), and you can't go wrong with the Kestrel.

There's also this (don't read comments if you haven't played AC5, MAJOR spoilers)
So, fellow Escapists (Escapees?), what was your favorite Ace Combat game?

Edit: And if you don't like it, please explain why. Even if the answer is just "It's not my cup of tea."

You forgot the PSP games.

It's a choice between 5 and Zero for me. 5 I found had the better overall plot, while Zero had the best 'moments' in the series. I've only played 5, Z, 6, and X2.

I'll vote for Zero.

Didn't include them as there were only 8 poll options and I felt the console games were more a "base" to the whole series.

I'm yet to play any other than the 360 one, a PS2 i can't remember and the first PSP one, but if i could find the original Ace Combats on PS2 i would buy them instantly.

I'm waiting as patiently as possible for Assault Horizon.

Ace Combat 4 of course.

Mobius 1 is fucking unstoppable. Okay?

Razgriz are cool and all, but not Mobius 1.

Cipher and Pixy are also pretty cool guys. BUT NOT MOBIUS 1.

Need I go on?

I'd have to go with two. I love Shattered Skies 'cause it introduced me to the series and it was amazing at its time, but I like 5 the most because of the story, the squadron, the aircraft available (Even though I just rolled with the SU-37 every time, oh well), and the characters. I felt like I wanted to fight for Osea, not like I was punting some dudes in the face because the game told me to. I felt bad about beating up Yuktobania though, sorry guys.

Also I got sad when Chopper died.

Probably AC4 more for 'OMG THIS GAME I LIKE A BOSS'.

I'd played the previous ones on the PS1 but AC4 was the first one I actually OWNED and BEAT (in almost one sitting).

Unsung War hands down. Best plot, best characters (Nagase was pretty), best combat missions. If only the wingmen were as effective as they were in Ace Combat 6, the game would have been perfect.
It also wins because, as far as I know, it is the ONLY game to not kill poor random pilots five and six pilots. I'm talking about the two flying the rescue chopper for Nagase and end up getting shot down. Any other game, and those two guys would have been toast. I applaud the creators for thinking outside of the box.

They're all pretty equal.
Mobius one is the most famous for being Solo, but Razgriz did many more badass things (hampered by the fact that Blaze had many wingmates), and The Demonlord did it all first, and his only wingmates either tried to best him in combat, or died or both.

I really want to play AC5 but I have yet to.

I've only played a little of Fires of Liberation and found myself enjoying the gameplay but doing my best to ignore the story.

So if I did want to get into the series guys, should I start with one of the older games, or play 6 again?

I exaggerate to be an ass, I know you are right for sure :p

But Mobius 1 is the one you have to meet special conditions to fight against on the Gauntlet in Zero. And I think he is definitely the most popular ace pilot amongst fans.

The Razgriz sure did a lot, flew the most missions that's for sure. I never really liked hearing their chatter in combat though...except Chopper.

Poor Chopper :(

Ace Combat 6 was not one of the strongest of the series, though it did have some alright multiplayer.

I would at the very least start with 4, then work to 5 and Zero.

Are you looking for story? The best story was in 5 in my opinion.

I absolutely loved Zero. It's one of the few times I've ever seen the 'anonymous hero' trope handled well, and the multiple playstyles thing had me running through the game more times than I can count. The AI on the tougher enemies was great, I thought.

But man, the missions were seriously awesome. Awesome variety, awesome originality, awesome complexity...and some not-so-awesome practically no-checkpoint length. Ah, well.

But still, the story got pretty dang interesting, and the resolution was positively fantastic, and still the best boss fight I've ever seen in a plane.

The portable games were nice and all, but just not near the same level of original thought and sheer production. They were too short and too repetitive. And the broken handling of Joint Assault made flying practically painful on the PSP's nub.

I loved Zero too, but something about the story bugged me a bit...

Where the hell was Yuktobania during all this?!

Also, would the arcade mode (Operation Katina) be considered a small separate game? Nothing much but the continuation of Mobius 1 was always fun.

ace combat x was my personal favorite. the voice acting was so-so but i thought it was really immersive and i liked how the legend of "the southern cross" slowly grew as the campaign went on.
