I usually had Liara in the party even tho she'd always wander off by herself and get shot up. I played as the tech/soldier class in both games so I liked having someone with biotics and then a soldier with me. And also I had a romance with her. Third party I didn't really care who, other than the fact that I hated Ashley, I actually rotated the 3rd party member out every mission I'd pick a new one.
ME2 I mostly had Tali in my party cause I schmoozed it with her. And was vastly disappointed in the romance scene.

I liked wrex in the first game. then i found my favourite team:Legion, cause a)he's a geth and why wouldn't i have a geth on my team? b)he's very good with tech c) good at long range d)he represents my cold calculating side that reacts in logic. And jack cause a) she has powerful biotics b)good at close range situations c)represents my more insane side. I use both my partners to help me make decisions in Mass Effect.
Wrex was my favorite combat buddy, but Jenkins had the best personality. His background and storyline were unmatched in the whole game. I tried the relationship option with him, but it just didn't work out. After about five straight minutes of briefing him on how to avoid getting shot, I eventually ran out to meet the geth, and they shot him. Deep down inside he will always be my favorite companion...
Top fav is Garrus for not only being a total badass, but also for being a little bit naive and kind under that scaly exterior.
second comes Tali for being clever, cute, interesting and kickass all at once (I'm pursuing her in ME2). The quarians themselves are a very interesting species too. In fact Tali reminds me a lot of my girlfriend (there's way more than meets the eye to both of them, and they're both cute, smart and nerdy. XD)
And I like Wrex for wrexing everyone's !@#$ on a daily basis. I loved his little story about his asari friend he dueled. It was awesome.
Also, I'm starting to REALLY like the last guy you can recruit in ME2. You know, THAT one? He's pretty interesting.
