What is your favorite pet, why is it your favorite pet, and what would your pet be able to do.

As for me, my favorite pet is a Narwhal, because Narwhals are the goddamn unicorns of the sea that can kill Cthulhu.
My Narwhal, can use Horn attack, Hyper Beam, Hydro-Pump, and Splash.

Cats. I love my two kittehs. They romp, they play, they cuddle, the purr, they're cute, and they never have explosive diarrhea/vomiting after eating something stupid. They never chew wood fixtures. They don't need to be walked...unless I want to rolf up and down the street with them army crawling in their harnesses yowling. Obviously though, I am a cat person, and have a slight biased.

They're the best. I don't get the allure of dogs, because their companionship always seemed more like babysitting then companionship to me.

Why no rats on the list? Rats are awesome, they're intelligent, cute and fluffy, and they scare the bejeezus out of people when you open the door and they are sitting on your shoulder!

I love my dog to pieces, but on the whole cats. Because I'm lazy and my cats love being lazy with me. But in reality, it's my dog who sleeps with me every night and every time I look at her she wags her tail. Most of the time, the cats couldn't give a shit unless I'm holding their food or actively go out of my way to pet them.
My choice is still cat, I just personally find dogs more fulfilling (and more effort).

EDIT: RATS! I love rats to pieces. They're my choice of cats. (sorry I forgot about rats until I saw the post above me as I don't have any right now). xD

And as a side note, I consider pets responsibilities not property. I'm not their owner or master, but a caretaker. So I use the term 'my' in a similar way that someone would use it for their children or nieces and nephews.
