Self explainatory, what is your favorite space universe and why. If it is broken into many serises which one.

If your wondering about the Star Other option, it is because most options have Star in their name.

F.Y.I mine is Doctor Who because of it's flexability, one episode can have hatefull salt & pepper shakers with lights and plugers nailed onto them, and another can have gas mask zombies during the london blitz.

You forgot men with helmets and silver pyjamas. I like the Warhammer 40k universe but out of the ones on the list I'd say Star Wars.

Despite the cancerous monstrosity that is the Expanded Universe, I had to say Star Wars.

Admittedly that was partly out of fanboyism, but it's got a great combination of a sci-fi setting with fantasy themes, and I always really enjoyed that. You've got mercenaries, bounty hunters, rebels, and, of course, Jedi and Sith; there's always going to be something interesting going on. I also like the extremely advanced technology; FTL travel, prosthetic limbs that work like ordinary limbs, and lightsabres? Where do I sign?

I'd have to say Aliens, though I only know it from the movies and the AvP games (they are crossover but based in the Alien-universe while the AvP movies are - for some weird reason - taking place in the present).

Warhammer 40k. Yes it's a very simple universe, yes it's superficial and over the top, but that's exactly what I love about it. That said, I love almost all sci-fi universes, from the far flung universe of Star Wars to the more close to home universe of Battlestar Galactica, anything.

I must go with Star Wars. They have Jedi, whose swords are made of plasma and whose mind powers are created out of sheer willpower and concentration (fuck midichlorians). They shoot lightning out of their fingertips, for Maul's sake! I can only imagine Darth Sidious taking Satan's line from The Pick of Destiny.

For literature, I think the best space opera universe created was in Karin Lowachee's books, beginning with Warchild. She crafted a very realistic universe and examined the politics surrounding the discovery of an alien species. Said aliens were also developed very well. The shining part of the books are her characters, who interact much as everyday people do nowadays...only their problems are a little different from ours. Anyway, great novels and I absolutely the dark, gritty universe.

For television, going to have to vote for Firefly's 'Verse. A western in space might not be entirely original, but the blend of Asian and Euro-American cultures was. And again, the characters really provided the life of the universe. Unlike most space operas, too, it was rather refreshing to see a lack of aliens.

And to round it out, for games I'm absolutely enthralled with the Mass Effect universe. It recalls classic space operas, but a lot of thought has gone into galactic politics and the functioning technology. And to unite a common theme in all of these, the characters are really original and well-developed.

Out of the ones listed, I'll say Star Wars, although I really like the Warhammer 40000 universe, and the universe of Dune appeals to me as well.

I dunno, to me the question exemplifies to me the thing that tends to ruin these franchises. Star Wars was fantastic when it was all wierd creatures and fantastic technology and mysterious magic; once I know roughly how much 100 credits can buy and how to tell the difference between a Rodian and a Gamorrean, the magic of the setting is pretty much completely lost.

For this reason, I love the Firefly 'Verse, but I absolutely refuse to play the tabletop RPG, and would be very, very wary of any Firefly video games that came out. I would also refuse to read the books that came out, although novelizations of these sorts of franchises are generally terrible anyway.

From the list, however, I would pick out the Battlestar Galactica setting... assuming we're talking about the new series.

Firefly because it's something I could actually see happening. And 40k cuz.... well I don't feel I should have to explain myself here.

The Firefly/Serenity one. It's the most believable one, in my opinion.
