I think I'd say the first one as it was the only one I payed any attention to.

X, but your missing II, III, and XII
II, III, V, and XI were deliberately left out - since they're not likely to have many fans, frankly, and the poll can only contain eight options.

Final Fantasy IX

Okay,
So it didn't have the overhyped materia-system
So it didn't deliver a love/hate relationship with things called 'Draw' and 'Junction System'
And it didn't have a cool silver-haired antagonist with a fallus-compensatingly long blade.

It DID put the fantasy back in Final Fantasy (the hell with cyberpunk themes in FF games!)
It had solid gameplay, gorgeous graphics at the time, awesome CG and a fantastic atmosphere.
A protagonist who wasn't some apathic doesn't-talk-much, but a charismatic thief who hunts for chickies.
It had Vivi Orntitier for crying out loud; good character development + emotions trigger = epic character.
The story is a modernized version of the classical 'epic quest' and the dialogues superbly written.
Last but not least, the music, a huge collection. Nobuo Uematsu delicatly plays your nostalgia and delivers pieces such as 'Jesters of the Moon', 'Loss From Me', 'The Place I will Return To Someday', 'You Are Not Alone', 'Dark Messenger' and many others.

From a critic's point of view, far from being the most innovative jRPG, but nonetheless maybe the most perfect one, creating pure harmony with classical elements.

for me its between IX and VII with the slight nod to IX. just because the materia system at points doesnt make sense to me, like how knights of round decreases your health 10%. other than that i love these two. and XII was pretty good too, definitely better than VIII and X

Is it really necessary to make a poll?
I think we can all agree when I say that most people like VII or III the most.
For me it's VII. Definitely.

FF6, it is the collective brilliance of all the final fantasy games melded together to form an FF that (in the core franchise) is still unmatched.

i have to agree it was like a revamped version of classic final fantasy that didnt take its self serious and just tried to make the game fun plus the card game was more fun than in ff8

Even though 9 seems to be in the lead at the time of me making this post.

Which I'm glad to see, VII gets way more hype than it's due. It was good, but IX was just fantastic.

I liked VII, as it essentially set the benchmark for what JRPGs - if not video games at large - could achieve, aesthetically, in the post-cartridge game design landscape. And in spite of being derided, its narrative also represented a quantum leap forward in terms of straightforwardly addressing post-modern phenomenon in JRPGs, something done more subtley in earlier iterations: whether religious revivalism, corporatism, or environmentalism.

Of course, FF VII has weak points - its inherent gameplay isn't superior to its predeccesors, the transition to CD was shoddily handled at times, and the plotline and dialogue can easily become confusing. It also set Square on what seems in hindsight to be the wrong path, emphasizing cinematic immersiveness and arty visuals over core gameplay and strong storytelling. But at the time - when noone had truly experienced a "next-gen" JRPG - the game felt like one of profound significance, and that feeling rung true as FFVII's formula was recycled and rehashes to the point of the game's innovations probably seeming intangible to new players. In this sense, the most important JRPG since Dragon Quest.

Of the games on this list? IX for sure, the characters were likable, there were a plethora of secrets to find, and the ability system was handled well.

Out of all the Final Fantasies? Final Fantasy Tactics for sure. The plot still stands as one of the finest in the series (even though the original translation for the Playstation BUTCHERED it), the gameplay is immensely addictive, and the job system is nothing short of amazing. ...In addition, Thundergod Cid.

Looking back on it, X was super-linear but also super fun. I liked VI through X about equally, but I'll just go with X.

I'll go with six for the Esper system which gives me great joy and Kefka who gives me sadistic joy. The rest of the cast was great too.

XI comes in a close second for just having an air of fun to it.

Indeed, ATOW, IX has about double the votes of it's closest rival.

While I loved and gave my vote to IX (because it was a throwback to all the other FFs. I consider it the series' swansong) I'll give credit to VII and admit it was revolutionary at the time. If the story hadn't been so emo and full of holes, maybe it would have ranked higher on my list. Instead, it's fourth (behind IX, X and VI, in that order).

Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan) is still my favorite. It's the FF game I enjoyed the most.
