I was pretty disappointed with FFXIII. I don't own Red Dead Redemption but I'd happily trade, from what little of RDR I've played, it's very fun and looks like it'll last a good long while.

I would take Red Dead Redemption over FFXIII any day. Typically I hate sandbox games but this one was done wonderfully and doesn't have to feel like a sandbox game if you don't want it to. On the other hand I lost interest 13 mins into FFXIII.

RDD is far better if you want to play an actual Game as opposed to an Interactive cutscene!

Final Fantasy XIII is like being sodomised with a sharpened broomhandle coated with your tears and fondest memories.

I bought and tried to enjoy FF13, but to me, it's more frustrating than fun. In my opinion, this JRPG is more or less riding on rails and the only break from that rail is 14 hours away (dunno where many get 20-24 hours from) from the very beginning of the game, and even then the monsters in the "free area" kick too much ass at first to be very good to grind on. Oh, and many of the main characters and their voices are unsurprisingly annoying (I cringed every time I heard Vanille speak, so a sex fantasy with her was out of the question lol).

I'll admit: Red Dead Redemption is quite boring if you're playing as a lawman, as there is so much more you could be doing if you're a bandit of the sort. In terms of technology, dress, transportation and weaponry, I'd say it's accurate. In my opinion, many of the characters are likable and tolerable, Bonnie and that old gunslinger in Mexico being my favorites.

I voted Red Dead Redemption.

As a player of both games, I would suggest Red Dead, and here is why:

FFXIII Pros:
great story
cool character ability customization
this combat does get fun and flows well, once you can start getting new abilities
great graphics

Cons:
When the player controlled character dies, it's game over
REALLY SLOW START (you are only auto-attacking for the first 2 hours, due to being unable to gain new moves during that time.)
It isn't until 20 hours in that you can finally customize your party
purely linear gameplay (until ch. 11, where you can finally do some mini-quests and explore some, then right before the final fight, where you can go back to said area)
Can't control your AI partners, or customize their AI programs (you can change their attack styles, just not what they do in them)

AT some point I decided, I wanted to put this down, but after already playing for 30 hours, I felt that I had made too much of a time investment, to do so. I finally put the game down when I realized that the AI had cause 80% or so of my deaths, and that the final boss could one shot party members and could do a massive aoe every so often, which are both fine (it is a final boss), the problem is, the death attack is unpredictable and can hit your played character, getting a game over, and the aoe, while predictable, I would sometime now have my AI healer not heal everyone all the way, and I would DIE from it.

RDR Pros:
Has a 'Slow down' mechanic that is fun
You can have fun in a sandbox immediately (though I suggest getting the Lasso first, only takes 2 sec)
Get to be a Cowboy
Can be a total douche or nice, though it just one of those really good or bad choices every so often
Good characters

Cons:
The instructions and notes appear in the upper right corner, and can be hard to read and you can sometimes miss the instructions
Controls take some getting used to
Story is meh

I know i have not finished the game, but I am mostly done wiht it, and I am enjoying it much more. I did have a moment about two missions into the game, where I decided to go do mini-missions and have fun exploring, only to find out I couldnt do them correctly, as well as the controls being wonky, and I put it down. I later game back, did one mission and got the Lasso (which was about a total of 3 missions in) and was able to have a lot more fun, especially once I got used to the controls.

Final Fantasy 13 was good, not spectacular, but just good fun. Read Dead on the other hand for me is just disappointing though, it just feels like there's so much empty space with nothing to do, which makes being a good guy extremely boring, and also a ton of the games opening missions are either boring and repetitive, or inconsistent with the main character (he's trying to become a better person and a family man, but doesn't hesitate to kill dozens of men petty thievery).
I hope I don't regret hitting "QUOTE" on the first intriguing post I see, but here we go:

FF 13 was nothing but spectacular: it was pure spectacle in fact. I had fun with it, but it's an experienced that is best enjoyed with little consideration. The story and characters are neat little caricatures, the story is sufficiently dramatic and epic in scope, and every visual aspect is flashy and exciting to the nth degree, but nothing about the game really holds up under a critical eye. It's just a wash. A very technically impressive wash, but a wash nonetheless.

RD:R, on the other hand, is built from the ground up with all the depth and substantiation to make it one of the best current gen titles I've played since... I'm thinking the Arkham Asylum. That's where I disagree with sennius. All the little side-quests are nicely varied and interesting, not that you ever have to do them, and all the characters are believable and well acted. I'd also like to say that I don't think Marshton's character is inconsistent at all. He is trying to be a better person, but he's a hardened killer, from childhood. His experience with his gang gives him ambiguous morals, but it also has shown him the value of peace. He is there exclusively to save his family and go home. What stands between him and that must simply be removed, regardless of how he feels about it. He's got to be one of my favorite characters, not only because he's well realized and interesting, but because his ambiguous values allow the in game moral choice system to accommodate for any player choices without seeming arbitrary of capricious.

Ironically, though this may be off topic, I'd say Red Dead is a much better "role-playing" game than FF 13.

No offense but that's YOU who doesnt hesitate to kill a man for petty thievery. You can also lasso the thieves very easily and bring them back to the victim. So its not exactley the games fault that you lke to shoot first and ask questions later.

Anyways, I would say RDR. Personally I liked FFXIII but its most definately not for everybody. Unless your a diehard FF fanboy I wuld go with Red Dead

There is no way I could recommend FF13 above RDR. Red Dead is just a much better and far more entertaining game.

I'm a FF fanboy and I really liked FF XIII, but I also really liked RDR, which was like a GTA game (Which I'm also a fanboy of). I think RDR was so much original and entertaining then FF XIII and there was alot more stuff to do. But these two games are very different, and I don't think you can compare them.

I've been playing Final Fantasy almost all my life and XIII was just awful to me. Red Dead Redemption on the other hand is an amazing adventure through the wild west. It's dramatic, engaging and funny at times. Get it.
really? that's surprising, with all the commercials it got before hand, i would've thought it would've been great. ill have to remember that for when i go to gamestop tomorrow, and trade in a lot for games for some cash.
Please dont listen to him he gave no points as to why. I could say i've been playing rockstar games all my life and red dead redemption sucks (i dont like it in all seriousness tho)

I've played every final fantasy besides 3 (Having a horrid time finding materail copy) Am an avid FF collector and i just love everything FF.

Now Sadley am a FF fan who gets shunned because i ended up loving 13 and it being easily my Favorite but i still think 6 might be slighty better not sure yet. FF13 has a intresting story but my favorite part is the characters.

I really cant say much besides this. Red dead redmption you'll prbably like it it will be nothing amazing but a good amount of fun. Now FF13 is a gamble worth the risk. Either you will hate it or you will love the game and it will be worth every penny!. Please dont just listen to what the masses say people like to just hate on FF13 for no real reason. Just look at them both what are you looking for? Dumb fun (RD) or A great story with characters you will most likley fall in love with (Also the combat system is great)
Funny how you gave no substantial reasons either really. And it's not "dumb fun" it's actually quite an engaging game with good narrative and allows for you to make choices and explore the place. The characters are quite interesting and the game is in a very under used setting, the controls are handled very well and there isn't anywhere the game will stop you from going from the word go.

so which should i take escapist? id like to open my self to the FF series, but id also like to try out RD:R. and i will be getting them in a couple of days, cause im trading in a lot of new games for them. so i need answers quickly please.
FF13 is a very linear rpg with a combat system that lets you control just one character and even has an auto battle function for those that can't be bothered, you won't be able to make any choices what so ever really and the story is pretty average really, while the world is gorgeous, it all gets a bit samey seeing as how you can't really interact with anything. The controls amount to select stuff in a menu and watch them do it, and move the stick to walk around, so they can't have screwed that up.

In all fairness, they're both decent titles and while I wouldn't pay top dollar for FF13, at a cheaper price it's worth it. Red Dead on the other hand has excellent replay value with multi player that doesn't feel like it is tacked on and is well worth the full price.

That is a bit of a hard question, as they are different types of games. I own XIII, and am currently trying to get the remaining trophies (stupid grinding stuff). It had it's moments, but it has its flaws as well. I can honestly say I've never stopped playing a game just to look at the scenery, but XIII did that. Very pretty. The characters are--when they are finally together and decide on a plan--fun to watch. Sazh is awesome. And the combat, once you begin to get into some of the tougher fights, becomes fast paced and frantic, even if it is painfully streamlined.

All that being said, it takes a good long time before any of that happens. XIII didn't feel like a Final Fantasy game at times for me. I miss shops (no, those save points don't count. Sorry), going to villages, talking to other people. It does feel like a chore at time.

My only information on RDR is that it keeps playing on the TV at the place I work at. Over, and over and over. I wouldn't be able to enjoy it now because I have constantly heard the main character go, "I rode in a gang. (BANG!) They left me to die after I'd been shot." No kidding? Did you REALLY expect a bunch of outlaws to help one of their own if that person was slowing them down in a getaway? So yeah, my view on RDR is a bit more...jaded. No help there I'm afraid.

I just thought of this more. A better idea would be to rent both and see which you prefer.
I thought of that, but then the thought struck me " where in the bloody hell would i find a working copy of RD: R, or FF13?" cause its impossible to find a newish game out here in florida till at least 3 months after they're out. and it seems like every time i go to BB, there's no copies of FF13, OR RD: R.

Wow, i didn't expect this kind of reaction, im surprised so few chose FF13, well, thanks guys, after reading all this stuff about RD: R, i think i know what im getting tomorrow.... if my trade ins get enough value....
Have you tried Gamefly? I haven't used it before but I hear that it's cheap and reliable.
