I have a confession. In my gaming spectrum the first Final Fantasy is a game I missed. Part of the reason is the fact the game was released two years before I was born. The second, and more important is that my house was a genesis house.

I was introduced too the series with FF7 and have been working my way through the series ever since. Final fantasy was the first game series I fell in love with, and watched die. Oh sure new Final fantasy games are being released but since 10-2 it has been getting harder and harder to get excited.

So I had reservations about getting Final Fantasy for my phone. Part of it was the 6.99 price tag, which is really steep for a phone game. More importantly it is hard to look at my phone and think "Yeah, I want to play a console game on this."

During a particularly dull car ride I got the demo, and the first thing I noticed was how well the game actually does control. The software D-pad remains out of the way of the action in the over world as well as the towns, while the menu driven combat has been altered to accommodate large buttons which are easily navigated through. It was genuine shock and before I knew it I had completed the trail and wanted more.

From here I found that, while menu driven combat has not gotten any more engaging, the cell phone seems to be a perfect platform for it. Despite the absence of a controller simply playing the game quickly reveals all of the commands, in such a way that the tutorial was not missed.

In addition, simply exiting out of the game, at any point allows you to resume right where you left off, giving the game the flexibility of a casual game, with the complexity of old school JRPGs. Don't think you won't have too save though. If you die, you die, reload.

I will say I have tried to play the game with roms, and even one the Playstation. I found the experience lacking, probably because I was spoiled by more complex games and hence lacked the patience to sit down with it.

Given what the game is, and how much I enjoyed it on the phone I'm going to have too say it was a well spent seven dollars. So if this is a gap in your gaming history, and you happen to have an iPhone or Windows Phone pick it up, because as it stands this is the best way to experience the game, in my humble opinion.
