For me i was using one of those radio station programs like spotify or pandora, forget the name and it played Nemo by nightwish and i have been listening to them ever since, seen them live once too.
Nemo was also the first Nightwish song I heard, although this was back when I (for some reason) listened to music on TV channels like Kerrang and Scuzz. Something I don't recommend unless you are happy to wade through the detritus of mismatched playlists featuring ancient music videos and general modern crap. Maybe things have improved since then?

I remember a few of the songs that got me interested in certain bands, find them below in list form:

Metallica - Watching 'Nothing Else Matters' on TV AAAAAGES ago. Still one of my favourite tracks and my long time fave band.

The Sword - Playing 'Freya' on Guitar Hero 2. A game that was destined to change my musical tastes on more than one occasion.

Dethklok - As with The Sword, playing 'Thunderhorse' on GH2. I had heard of Metalocalypse before but dismissed it as a crappy TV show aimed at metal fans. But after playing/hearing Thunderhorse I was tempted to actually watch the show and it was an instant hit. Three albums and four seasons later and I still think they're a great band, despite not really being real.

Faith No More - "Midlife Crisis" on the GTA: Vice City soundtrack. I'm not as big a fan of them as I was, but I still love the song. And the game for that matter.

Masterplan - The One Piece AMV featuring the song 'Sail On'. Fantastic song and my favourite Anime combined, guaranteed triumph. Although I only have their first album, so I probably don't count as a fan.

I've no idea how I came to like the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Iron Maiden. They always seem to have been there in my music collection.

I'm not going to post 5-10 videos for each of the genres i'm currently into, but i will post the 2 main ones that got me into my grove.

Necrophagist - Stabwound
This was the song that got me into death/tech-death. The guitar riff in the intro immediately punched me in the face and told me to get over the vocals. Up until this point, the vocals were my main turnoff into heavier forms of metal (having been listening to mudvayne and slipknot through my middle and high school years), but this finally opened my eyes to what i was missing by dismissing the death genre because of the vocal style

Candlemass - Clearsight
........i mean, just listen to that sh*t. This got me into doom from the sheer power of the vocals coming through my entertainment center speakers. His voice just filled the house and i got shivers. I've been a huge fan of candlemass ever since, and have loved just about every one of their vocalists (minus the Chapter IV days)

I lied, 1 more:

Zebulon Pike - (Behold) the Wizzard's Fountain
This showed me the world of Stoner/Downtempo metal. One of my favorite things to do in college was grab a beer, turn off all the lights, sit in bed, and just chill to this album. I was never a stoner, but drinking a nice porter or stout while treating my ears to this in a dark room was an amazing experience.

There are quite a few songs that got me to discover and admire other genres when I was younger. Here are just a few that I can recall:

Punk Rock - "All the Small Things" by blink-182
Rock/Alternative - "In the End" by Linkin Park
Hip Hop/Rap - "Brush Your Shoulders Off" by Jay-Z
Gangsta Rap/G Funk - "California Love" by 2Pac & "Foe Tha Love of Money" by Bone Thugs N' Harmony
Soul - "Soul with a Capital S" by Tower of Power
JPop - "Simple and Clean" by Utada Hikaru

I this song by The Jesus and Mary Chain was what got me into shoegaze and other heavily ear damaging feedback drenched genres.

I can't remember specific songs, but I know Guitar Hero 2 got me into a lot of different bands/genres

Though, I do remember in my Junior year in High School, I used to think that Coheed and Cambria were a crappy band. Than I heard "Welcome Home" by them and I pretty much fell in love with the band. Though the song that REALLY sold them to me was "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3"

There are at least four I can recall quite plainly, actually.

It brought back memories of ambient soundscapes I'd always hear when I was growing up because my mother ran a daycare and would play them during nap-time.

I'm sure there are a bunch of other ones, but a lot of them were so long ago that I can't really remember. I'm sure growing up with stuff like Meatloaf, Queen, Pink Floyd, Survivor, Matchbox Twenty, Phil Collins/Genesis, Elton John, Huey Lewis & the News, etc. had an impact on my musical tastes.

Daft Punk pretty much got me into 90s disco and dance music, which I'm pretty grateful for, as it goes.

What's the difference between rap and hip hop in the context of this poll? Not that rap is a genre anyway, it's just vocal style.

Song that got me into r&b (although I still don't listen to much) apart from this guy. There's so much nostalgia attached to this song though.

Song that got me into hip hop (I might have listened to the odd bit here and there but it was this album that marked me really into the genre)

Got me into indie

Got me into electronic stuff, especially dubstep

Ah yes, I remember it clearly, the song that first got me interested in the entire metal genre. That song, introduced to me one fateful day by my brother, was Iron Man, by Black Sabbath.

Really liked it, so I looked up more of their stuff. That lead me to War Pigs, Paranoid, and beyond.

Of course, that isn't mentioning my passion for good punk, more specifically hardcore punk and new-wave, which I was introduced too by these two songs, respectively:

And who could forget 80's pop and classic rock?

Now its only the heaviest of the heavy that I enjoy. Strapping Young Lad, Gojira, Allegaeon, Meshuggah, Vale of Pnath...the list goes on & on!
MF DOOM, Madlib, El-P, & Aesop Rock were all on albums promo'ed by Adult Swim
From there it was stuff like Juno Reactor, Infected Mushroom, Chemical Brothers, Stereo MCs, Ratatat
This track in particular because I remember taking Ventolin as a small child & hearing that same high pitched noise.

The only one that I clearly remmeber is that Daft Punk- One More Time got me into the dance gerne. I guess Alien Ant Farm- Smooth Criminal sort of count but I favour dance far more than rock.

Daft Punks Discovery album is what really introduced me to electronic music.

Dragonforce's song "Valley of the Dammned" was my first forray into power metal.
Warbringer's "Dread Command" was my induction into the world of thrash.
Vader's song "Gin Psie!" was the very first death metal song I heard that I actually liked.
"Freya" by The Sword is what sparked my intrest in stoner/doom metal.
Korpiklaani's song "Beer Beer" was my first weird experience with folk metal.
Sunn 0)))'s "Agartha" was the very first drone metal song I heard and I was instantly hooked. Never heard something so sinister in my life.

That is really good, thanks, didn´t know them yet.
Folk would be my first choice in music. Dylan´s "Don´t Think Twice" got me into it. Other than that it´s mostly Rock with The Original Fleetwood Mac´s "Oh Well".

My first doom/stoner metal song:

The Dopethrone album was on at full volume, wall-crumbling bass for almost a year at home. It was our travelling music from concerts to festivals and back again.

What got me into metal was this:

...especially before exams or during times of heightened stress levels. I replaced metal with caffeine for a while. Messed me up bad.

On a sidenote:
The Dopethrone album is Electric Wizard's most awesome thing to me. I can totally accept Witchcult Today and I can listen to Black Masses - they just don't have that bulls eye impact on my brain and central nervous system like Dopethrone has.

But it was Electric Wizard that made me open up to a genre I would not have actively checked out had it not been for the awesome, awesome Dopethrone album. These things can be rather random, at times. I learned about Iron Monkey during a Sepultura gig. And, boy, do I enjoy Iron Monkey.

Nerdcore artists:

In that order. The music these artists produce is far better than anything you can find on the radio these days.

Rap:

Check out his new album, Cardboard Castles, just released a few days ago.

Spanish Pop:

Yes, I have strange taste. Stop looking at me like that.

I discovered The Cleaners from Venus through MGMT's cover of Only A Shadow.
I also found a little ditty called Pantomime and have liked Imagine Dragons ever since.
