For those of you who don't know, Folie a Deux is the title of the recently released new album by Fall Out Boy. This thread is basically aimed at people who are fans of FOB, so I appreciate there may not be too many on this site. However, if you haven't heard it, look on Youtube for any of the new songs from the album (list is on Wikipedia). The point of this thread, therefore for those who are still wondering, is to discuss new music in general and Fall Out Boy in particular (as a fan I don't know many fellow FOB fans), and perhaps to discuss other people's favourite musicians and the new up and coming stars of 2009.

Personally, I would also like to mention a more recent new act, who will be most recognised by UK fans. The new duo on the block, La Roux, have recently released a debut single 'Quicksand' and are tipped to be the next big group in the UK. Has anyone heard their songs yet? Have a listen at www.myspace.com/larouxuk and tell me what you think.

P.S. Sorry if this thread has been done before, I checked the search button and nothing came up that wasn't extremely dated, with nothing for FOB at all.

P.P.S. Please don't complain too much about the poll as this is the first time I've actually tried a poll on any of my threads.

I definetly like the song, but I don't want to say its their best one. Its up there though. The entire album is really good imo.

Can't say I've heard of La Roux, I'll check them out though.

Edit: Checked La Roux out, not a fan.

I only really mention that song as their best for two reasons. One is that I do actually see it as their best to date, and two is that Pete Wentz, during the press release of the new album, admitted that the band also thought of it as their best song so far. I especially like the collaboration with other Fuelled by Raman artists and Elvis Costello at the end, especially since Elvis sings the lines to another song from the same album as part of the finale to What a Catch, Donnie.

I dislike Fallout Boy with a passion (mainly because of Pete Wentz lack of talent) but I love Dance Dance and I think their singer is pretty good.

So I think Dance Dance is their best song.

Fair enough. I quite like the video for that, with the school dance and the band playing on the stage while acting at the same time. Kind of gives it a bit of a surreal quality, in a way...

Not a fan of Fall Out Boy. Not my sort of music, really - too simplistic, don't like the vocals or the production (however I can appreciate that a lot of people do like that sort of thing). My biggest problem is with a lot of the fans (Trivun not included, I'd imagine).

I have no problem at all if people mainly listen to mainstream music, but when people start touting bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Mayday Parade, Metro Station, Paramore etc. as 'the best bands ever' without considering a lot of other bands that the world of music has to offer then I get a bit annoyed. Unfortunately, Fall Out Boy seems to attract a lot of fans who spend more time screaming about how much they love Pete Wentz than anything else and that puts me off them somewhat. There have been more than one occasions when I've been expressing my dislike of FOB and I've been met with replies like 'Well you're just jealous that Fall Out Boy are more popular than you and any of the bands you like.' I get reminded of stupid comments like that every time I hear FOB on the radio or whatever and even if I was in the mood to listen to some catchy pop-punk then I wouldn't listen to them because of this.

So yes, I'd imagine you're not like that Trivun, but nevertheless.. not a fan.

Insofar as music we're into, if anyone is a fan of FOB or alternative rock/pop-punk in general than I'd advise you to check out The Dear Hunter. They have a similar sound to FOB in parts and they're currently making a series of six concept albums, the last one released in 2007 and their next due out sometime this year. The lyrics are interesting and they dabble in a variety of genres, sometimes sounding like Queen and at other times seeming to be influenced by bluegrass and folk. Good stuff in all.

I'm hoping 2009 will turn out to be a good year for music. My favourite release so far has been Jon Hassell's 'Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street' which is a lovely Ambient/World whatsit, even if the album title is more than slightly silly. 2009 is also supposed to mark the release of Dananananaykroyd's debut, 'Hey Everyone!,' which I'm looking forward to after their 2008 EP 'Sissy Hits.'

I have nothing against Fall Out Boy and actually like their previous albums but I'm not liking the direction their stuff is going. But to me these days it seems like everyone is changing their style.

I can't respect FallOut Boy after they had their guitarist spray himself with a can of Axe during a music video.

Or when Pete Wentz cut the guitarist's solo from the music video, even though he actually looked like he was going into something epic.

Eh, I guess my problem is more with Pete Wentz being a controlling egoist than anything else.

Still don't like the newest music. Older stuff was at least halfway decent.

If you're complaining about product placement then I'm pretty sure a lot of bands do this, most notably the Strokes.

I don't respect The Strokes either. Although Reptilia is a pretty good song.

And no; not a lot of bands do this. Only the major sellouts.

Eh, I'm not really a fan, but I gotta say I liked other songs by them more. I didn't listen to the entire video, but the beginning wasn't great, IMO.

Fair enough. I can see where you're coming from since I raise an eyebrow whenever I see Mike Portnoy wearing a Dream Theater t-shirt. I think we have differing opinions as to what 'selling out' means but then most people do, it seems.

If not their best, it's definitely up there. I like its self-reflection, and the message (growing up) reflects how their sound has matured and their lyrics, too. I primarily like them due to Patrick Stump; While not as bad as he used to be, Pete Wentz is too much of an attention whore.
They do put on amazing concerts. Patrick plays around with his voice, and his vocal talent become rather evident. Watching him get all shy during "Story Time" is rather amusing as well.

I really like Folie a Deux, due to its new-found maturity and urge to get away from the high-pitched nasal voice. I'm not saying high is bad, of course, but a little range is nice too.

Heard of Hey Monday? They were at the concert, and are rather good.

Give it another chance it gets better as the track progresses. At least that's my opinion. The last minute or so is great.

On Topic:
I think 'What a Catch Donnie' is one of their better songs, but this album is a very strong one (I prefer it FAR more than Infinity on High) and there are several great songs. I don't think I can say if it's their best or not. I think it's a great song but it isn't my favorite... so I can't really say.

I see where you're coming from with regards to Infinity on High. I quite liked that album, but it wasn't really as good as some of their previous stuff. The new stuff is definitely moving away from their old songs, but we're seeing that with a lot of bands now. Linkin Park have been moving more towards their collab stuff with Jay-Z and others, Panic at the Disco have moved to a more quirky sort of sound (listen to the lyrics on anything from Pretty Odd), and we're just seeing a lot more artists try new styles rather than stick to their old genre. Another example is Coldplay. On their recent EP, Prospekt's March, they did a cover of their own song Lost with Jay-Z, and called it Lost+. I noticed they were moving in a different direction with the whole album to their previous work. I suppose in the music industry, it's a case of 'adapt or die'...

I'm actually really excited to see artists break away from their set formulas. I've never really been a fan of Coldplay, but I really enjoyed Viva La Vida and Prospekt's March (Lost+ is now one of my top played songs). A lot of people were down on Linkin Park for Minutes to Midnight, but I give them credit for trying to expand themselves and I'm really looking forward to their next album (whenever that will be). Also I would LOVE to see a follow up to Collision Course, that album was criminally short.

As far as the music industry being 'adapt or die' I think that it is slowly becoming that way, for years artists have been releasing the same album over and over (I'm looking at you Nickelback). I think this can be a good and a bad thing; on one hand we get to see artists really show off their talents and be able to see them evolve, but on the other hand it may shorten someone's career if they can't keep up with the pack.

It's plenty good, but the end is kind of lame what with the old song montage.

None of the members matter at all except for Patrick. He would be better if he dropped the rest of the band, especially, *sigh*, Pete (and maybe kept the drummer).

Yes, I am a metalhead and I like FOB. Eat me.

I'm going to have to pull you up there. If Patrick dropped the band, they'd still be musically talented... But they'd have no lyrics. Patrick is remarkably shy and not the best with words (although he's getting better) where as Pete is, for all his shortcomings, quite the lyricist.
