Lets say there is some amazingly large catastrophe about to happen to the Earth. There are several bunkers around the world that will protect a certain percentage of the human population and they are all under your control.

Assuming you had already guaranteed that every one you cared about was safe; how would you determine who is allowed to live?

Now I want every one to play nice. You needn't even respond, I would be happy with just having you vote (that's right you can put in your two cent with out even having to expose you username).

Quite frankly I would never take it upon myself to decide something like that. But this is theoretical time I would choose the healthiest and best geneticaly suited people out there. I would also make sure that most of these people would be able to survive with minimal resources in the wild. People that don't need to rely on western civilisation, programmers and bankmen won't be much use after the apocalypse.

I'd go with the best hearts and the best genes. Gotta get along, and then we've got to start again. Kindest, healthiest, and smartest (in that order), hopefully with good trade skills and creative spirits. Farmers, doctors, teachers, and builders would be highest priority when it comes to employment.

I'd have to cherry-pick. Saying "all the smart people" and "all the scientists" sounds good, but there are areas of expertise that we're going to need people schooled in for survival. I'd bring in a large amount of children, favoring females, not because of any sentimental attachment (I have no idea how I'd manage them all anyway), but because we need a large, young, teachable breeding population to re-seed the earth with humanity. If I need a blanket statement, here it is: youth, agreeable personality, learning speed and two X chromosomes.

No artists or poets. I am selfish and eager for fame, and that is to be my job.

Haha yes! That is the first thing that I thought of when reading this, some kind of big gladiatorial competition, survival of the fittest etc.

Really though I guess it would be pretty complex. It would make sense to allow all the younger people to survive to further the human race, but that would be no good if they were all idiots and there were no scientists or academics left. You would just have to find some kind of balance between all areas of life to carry forward as much of civilisation as possible.

I'm thinking a mix of what we need, and find the best people in that field. So, the best farmers, men most suited for survival, women who are fertile, ect. That kinda thing.

You'd need smart people, but you'd need them to be fairly healthy and actually capable of the labor required to rebuild society, so I picked "Best genes" figuring that encapsulated all of those points fairly well.

Well, if you're going to be sitting inside a giant computer-controlled vault, then arguably a computer guy would be pretty damn handy. As would a guy who knows something about vaults. >.>
