Have you MET people?

Its bad enough that we let people drive, but to give them all full three-dimensional mobility?

Scary.

Real zeppelins, though, I'd do that over aeroplanes anyday. Its like a cruise liner, IN SPACE.

This idea sounds confusing and ridiculous, zeppelins (sorry for misspelling it, I'm too lazy to check) didn't take off for a reason - helium ignites so easily.
No, it doesn't.

You are thinking HYDROGEN

I say do it.
If only because I want to hit someone who is riding one of them on the highway as I go 85.
For science, of course.
Unless you could get your car to fly this seems infeasible.
Well, you did say hoverbike...I assumed you meant it would be a few feet off the ground at most.

But if it flies, I just need to strap more minions onto the vehicle in question.

Pretty sure you're thinking of hydrogen...

Zepplin bicycles may not be what we need...but Zepplin BUILDINGS out over the ocean...that would be pretty cool...

Actually it was that hydrogen ignites easily and they used hydrogen back in the day. Germany asked us for helium since we had just figured out how to produce it or something but we said no as they were an enemy nation.

I believe one of the things the hindenburg was going to do in the US was fill up on helium. We would not export our helium to germany to fill their zepp. fleet (floatilla?), however.

Eh whatever. I never claimed to be an expert at science. Also I am currently a zombie...

Yeah, from the amount of quotes I'm guessing that too.

Ah thanks. I've always wanted to know more about it.

(And I'm being serious, no sarcasm there. It does interest me.)

Helium is an inert gas. It's not combustible, like, at all.

Now Hydrogen on the other hand...
Ah yes. Why do I suddenly remember the periodic table so clearly after proving myself retarded, with hydrogen and helium on opposite sides at the top....

We need more streamlined versions of Zeppelins with Jet engines attached.

I can see nothing going wrong.

i have a problem with anything flight based anyway... people have enough trouble DRIVING on a two dimensional plane... now we are going to put vehicles that take advantage of the third dimension?! can you imagine mom turning around to discipline her children in the back seat only to press the throttle forward?! they crash and burn family dies and takes out several pedestrians... bad... its not so much that i don't think it won't physically work but i think that the balloon would need to be far to large to be of practical use... and then it would give way to fast modes of flight transportation... in short if you want to fly go get your pilots license...

People keep on talking about how explosiveness is an issue however they forget one thing... It will be a flying bicycle! Nothing on it could be reasonably expected to trigger an explosion.

On mythbuster's they made a fully grown man on a lawn chair fly 100ft high with just a number of weather balloons. It should only take minor modification to fall in line with your idea. Especially if you only want to hover 5 or 10 feet.

The biggest problem would be altitude control I think.

My plan is to have the combined weight of pilot and vehicle be as light as possible while still being positive. There will be a vertical propellar *I know I spelt it wrong* underneath the bike and a horizontal propellar on the rear and instead of a gear shift there would be a mechanism that lets you switch between or use both propellars. If you were to not pedal the thing would begin to descend.

If someone could draw up some concept art to help people understand what I am talking about that would be nice.

What's stopping your average psychotic prankster from shooting down your hoverbike with a well-aimed blow-dart, arrow, or finely sharpened pencil?

It would never work, there are to many hazards and you probably wouldn't be able to achieve a great enough speed for it to matter. However, you wouldn't have to worry about following roads and worrying about other traffic getting in your way. Neat idea, but not at all plausible.

Helium's an inert gas, it doesn't react with anything, you are thinking of hydrogen my friend.

Edit:I should of read the rest of the page sorry for telling you for like the millionth time :(

your thinking of hydrogen, and it didn't help that they coated the Hindenburg (or however it's spelled) with rocket fuel...
OT: a personal zeppelin would be expensive, cumbersome, pointless, and most likely wouldn't work, however somehthing like this might: http://www.popsci.com/gear-gadgets/article/2008-06/re-introducing-airship

edit: read above post, subtract apology (NO REGRETS)

You're lucky, you edited that in time. I was just about to give you a piece of my mind carefully crafted into a witty put down.

Nah, it's cool. I'm not sure how I got A's in Science, I know nothing about it xD

Nothing.
Hence me pushing for it.
My afternoons are quite boring.
Having a floating target gallery would liven things up a bit.

Yes but if you float into power lines....

Also its a half-decent idea but it has way to many flaws, also whats controlling lift? How are you supposed to land the thing once its in the air?
