Poll: Forgetting a dream

Me and my brother/dad were fighting a while back about whether you have a dream if you forget it. Now I say if you totally forget it, it doesn't count but my dad and brother say it counts as a dream even if you don't remember anything at all. Now this isn't "Hmm, weird dream I had last night, I can barely remember" its more of "Mmmhh... time to go get in the shower" (meaning you have no idea a dream happened)

dreams always occur when you have REM sleep. you may have REM sleep, but not remember your dreams, because when you sleep, your long term memory is shut down, so you can't remember more than fragments if at all, and only those if you force into into LTM after you wake up

This is even worse than the tree-in-the-forest thing, that one can at least be argued a little bit because some of the words have more specific definitions than people think.

When you sleep, you always dream. You can actually train yourself to remember them, but youll generally remember one if you wake up in the middle of one.

Similar to a tree falling in the woods. Even if someone isn't around to hear it it still makes a noise. People have, i think, about 4 dream per night on average.

Also: please tell me i'm not the only one who, before starting a new job or doing something big (tattoo, travelling, appointment somewhere etc) I dream about that day just generally. And will probably repeat that day three, four or five times... In my dream...

The only dream I actually dream is a recurring one of me drowning, other than that no dreaming.
But yeah, I guess. If you dream something then forget it, you still dreamed it.
It's like putting something down then forgetting where you put it, but you still put it down somewhere.

Kind of my point though, just because you don't remember it happening doesn't mean it didn't happen. Of course then you come to the problem of people telling you bullshit and trying to figure out if it really happened or are they making up shit. Man, reality is screwed up.

4 or 5 times? Nah, but i'll dream the next day quite often.. and something bad will normally happen, and it'll confuse the hell out of me because when i wake up because untill i talk to someone i'm never sure if it happened or not. Except this one time where i climbed a flaming tower of plexiglass XD, still seemed real at the time though.

Nitpick point. You don't dream at every stage in the sleep cycle. REM sleep guarantees your most vivid dreams. If you consistently miss REM sleep or have certain sleep disorders, you can actually start "dreaming" in real life. This would be called hallucinating. So if you're not hallucinating on a daily basis, chances are you're dreaming when you sleep. Congratulations.

Saying that something didn't happen just because you didn't remember it is... well, that's faulty reasoning. Whether or not you remember something doesn't change the fact that it happened.
