I was just playing Mount&Blade, shopping for new armor. as i looked over the different armor and stats, i realized that in a lot of games like this, the better armor often ends up looking stupid, and the cool armor winds up being weaker. at this point, i gotta decide; would i rather have my male character wear a heavily armored dress, or cool crappy armor?

In games where you get to choose your character's armor, what do you want out of your gear; cool looks, or good stats?

I usually go for stats. For games like Ragnarok though the only real modifications is in headgear, so it's generally a case of having your battle gear, and your social gear. In other games though the best stats are generally the coolest looking ones.

Ragnarok is sort of about headgear, so you can feel compelled to find and create headgear even if it's just for social.

on Fallout, I ran around wearing Grimy Businesswear and the Raider Wastehound Mask

Because I looked like Scarecrow from Batman Begins, that was the only reason

Led to lots of gory (totally worth it) deaths

Practically always stats. Only when my character is already totally overpowered do I go for looks. My characters might look totally ridiculous in some gear, but I really don't care.
Why do I even bother creating a character that looks good when soon after he's wearing a dorky helmet?

I will always choose function over form. If a great piece of armor looks cool and has awesome stats then BONUS!

I generally wear stuff I like the look of. When I used to play WoW, I wouldn't use any of the higher level stuff I could get because I thought it looked stupid.

It's the same in Oblivion. I didn't like the look of the Mithril armour, so I stuck with the leather (until after I started downloading mods).

Stats if I'm trying to get that 'untouchable god-like level'. Looks if I already achieved it.

If it's only minor (and I mean < +2 what I'm already wearing) then I'll choose how it looks. I don't want pink shoulder armor and yellow chest armor and a purple helmet, you know? But often times, I'll get such an overpowered helmet or something that's just ugly but I'll have to choose it because aesthetic appeal only gets you so far... especially in Torchlight/Diablo II where it hardly matters since A) It's single player and B) You'll be surrounded by enemies 90% of the time so you can't really see your character anyway.

Depends. I like cool looking weapons and armour but if it will benefit me having crappy looking stuff with good buffs then I will go with the latter.

I'll go for stats except in two situations.

A) The armour/weapon looks so bad, that I can't stand it.
B) I'm trying to challenge myself by not playing with the best equipment.
