So, I've been around the escapist for a little while now and I tend to be more of a forum lurker than poster. I do often find myself writing out responses to thread, sometimes in very great detail only to click cancel and not posting. I sometimes do it because I feel like my point will get lost among the sea of other posters, sometimes because I think it is a moot point, sometimes because I don't think that I would get my point across at all.

So, I am curious as to if other people do this or not. Do you do it for different reasons? Are there certain criteria about a thread before you will respond to it?

Sometimes. Usually because I'm afraid I'm not making sense or going off on a tangent.

I do so rarely, mostly on a particularly large thread, or one that I'm not quoting a bunch of people that has reached 3 pages.

Yeah, and for various reasons. Sometimes I realize about halfway through that I'm just being a whiny ***** and I recant my statement. Other times it's off-topic, rambling, I'm drunk, etc.

That's one nice thing about the Internet, I guess. You can take your words back. Sometimes, anyway. Damn ninjas.

I used to, as I used to think that what I had to write was usually not good enough to post.

Now I just don't care, and post on pretty much anything I have an opinion about. Turns out that others do share my opinion, and that's how I've made a couple friends here.

Well, since I got my last major suspension. I followed a new rule for posting

1) Is the poster a dumb ass
2) Does he/she not get the point
3) Are they potentially trying to get a negative response from me?
4) Have they insulted me
5) Does the post seem incredibly long winded

If yes to any, I don't post. 'tis the reason I haven't been suspended in a while.

Yes, mainly due to crippling shyness (on and off line) and fear that I'll have a mini debate about my opinion, and I really don't like the idea of it >_>

Sometimes I do.
Usually because I type what I'm thinking, but then I read it out loud and it doesn't make sense.
I did that more when I first came here. I don't do it as much now.

Sometimes... usually its because the topic in question is about a subject that is somewhat sensitive for me, and my response emphasizes that point a bit too much. Better to say nothing than to say something that could yield some unwelcome responses.

Sometimes when people get on my bad side I tend to write something down, think about it, take it away and just let it slide.

*Edit: I won't put any form of rascism or other things that might profoundly hurt somebody in my posts. I try to avoid cursing as much as I can. Words are my weapons and the arsenal diverse. These are my criteria.

Yes, I've done it before. Usually about halfway through I realise that my opinion on the thread isn't really strong enough to post a comment that isn't either totally off topic, a bad joke, or slightly edging towards trolling. And I'd prefer to avoid either, for my own sake and, in the case of the jokes, for the sakes of others too.

Yeah I've done it before... I usually don't post it if I'm concerned about language in the post and I'm unable to properly express what I'm trying to say without numerous curse words..

What do you mean? How does shyness even factor into this? We are online and you are anonymous.

OT:
No, never. I determine rather quickly if I want to reply to a topic or post, and if I start writing it means I will post. No regrets there, why should there be? I am the king of the world.

Quite a few times. Sometimes I read them over to myself and thnik that what I just wrote looks silly or doesn't sound right. Also I do it sometimes when the subject is a touchy one.

Yeah, I do that sometimes. I do it when I'm afraid I'm gonna offend people too much or, like the OP, I just find my post to be pointless.

Yes, very often, as in every other day. Part way through, or even completely finished, I'll scrap a post because it either makes me sound like a dick or an idiot. Surprised I ever post at all.

Of course. I'll go to post something, read it through, and realize that I come across as incompetent, or incoherent. It's mostly because there are times where I can't communicate my thoughts as well as I would like to.
