I like how halo did it... Smack em with the rifle and get on with your life. When you think about it, they did the most realistically.

Battlefield: 1942, Vietnam, 2, and 2142 had the perfect system. You switch to your knife, or in Vietnam's case machete or scythe, then hit the guy in the back for an instant kill. 2142 made it more exciting by adding dog tags.

Since you die so quick by getting shot, running around with a knife isn't viable. But boy is it rewarding to knife someone in the back when they're sniping.

Knifing actually meant something in those games. So it pissed me off a bit when they took the CoD route in BF:BC2 and made it into a button press.

As indifferent as I am to Halo, that was a great feature. I think games could combine what I said previously with the smacking. Make the smack very short ranged, take off 33% health, and stun for a half second. It'll still be rewarding, and punishing against those that get too close. Plus, it's more realistic than whipping out a knife as fast as CoD and BC2. Really, do they have a third hand down there with a deathgrip on the knife?

having your eyes poked out by a thumb probably would kill you seeing as that method is supposed to be used to rupture the brain or something, the guy in Army of Two does a great job of this

I think that the best style of melee is probaly the one in Halo 3, where it's 2 hits to kill and you hit with the butt of your gun or with a punch/elbow smash

Duke's Mighty Boot.

Available at all times, even when you're running full sprint, firing your guns or both at once.

i prefered killzone's system, slow and brutal (rifle butts took at least 2 goes to kill a helghast, pistol whips about 3 strikes before thye stopped moving, and like in counter strike the knife had to be selected separately)

bad company 2 has it right, most realistic. felt like actually stabbing someone and is harder to do than cod4+. only thing is if you get shot a couple of times it should cancel the animation really, its pretty unrealistic when you put a few bullets in a guy he carries on stabbing you.

separate selection is nice too like in counterstrike's knife, far cry 2's machete and TF2 etc.

I think that the reason why melee (or indeed any close range combat) is so finicky in fps´s is that aiming at a nearby target is harder in games, enemies can survive repeated hits, move unnaturally (sprint, jump in the air, go prone midair, turn 180 degrees, land on concrete, all while reloading a machinegun...). But the biggest thing is that in most if not all online shooters, the enemies don´t react to being hit (sure, being stabbed probably does not result in an instant kill but the victim probably won´t just ignore it like nothing´s happened)

I find Melee in KZ3 to be quite satisfying. Sneaking up on someone and getting a nice cutscene of slitting a throat or snapping a neck. But wouldn't suit every FPS this style.

I also like that if his teammate catches your attempt he can kill you and save the guy whos throat was about to be cut - I'm pretty sure I have experienced this anyway. So it isn't necessarily a gauranteed kill in that sense once the anamation starts. It's hilerious but a bit silly when people start queing up behind each other taking turns with melee kills in KZ3 -if you've seen it happen you will know what I mean.

The old melee style weapon thrust insta-kill from KZ2 is still there which is nice to mix it up so it's not all slow sneaky cut scenes.

Not really a big fan of having to pull out a seperate melee weapon such as a knife in a action oriented FPS. Bit of a pain in the ass and liability. Allthough it increases the risk for the person attempting it and therefore probably rewards more fairly an instant kill.

Happy hunting!
