Almost all FPS games have tutorials on how to play the game. And the first thing they do is to tell you to move use WASD and mouse to look around (for consoles use one analog to move other to look around).
Do you find this useful in any way???

Of course it's not important to an experienced gamer. But every new gamer has to start somewhere, and for them even seemingly obvious instructions like these can be helpful. I'm a console gamer, and I know how silly it is to be told for something like the 300th time that I move with the left thumbstick, and look around with the right one. But still, there really are people who don't know, and it's not like it takes a lot of my time. The instructions are there and gone, and if they help someone then they're not so bad.

Its important because it is a quick orientation to the game and its controls, not all game use the same control or play mechanics - sure WSAD is pretty universal but what about the other 30 keyboard mapped controls or methods of interacting with the environment?

the only things instruction booklets are for is looking at when you are riding in the car on the way home after buying the game simply cause you can't play the game yet...that or during installation of the game if it has to be installed on a PC.

I can think of some instances where it fits really well into the scenario. The start of Halo 3, for instance.

I think its important cos contols vary slightly from game to game, dont wanna find yourself trying to pull off an awesome knife kill and end up crouching like a sitting duck cos the controls arent the same as the last game you were playing.

I don't personally but I've played similar games before. Not everybody has, though, everybody has to have a first FPS, and that's why they're there. I don't mind them, they're harmless.

I dont mind tool tips or pop-ups quickly hinting at the controls, What I dont like is a whole unskippable level tutorial.

(Also not the ME style pop-up boxs where theres about 10 paragraphs on the smalllest possible font devoted to telling you how to change weapon)

New gamers need them, hell they are useful for some people who haven't played a FPS in a while to.
