So this fall I am heading off to College, the problem is the College does not offer dorms as it is in New York and dorms would cost the College a lot of money. I can get to the college from my current house but I hate being stuck in this tiny little prison of a home.

My only hope of getting out of my house is to join a frat or pull a lot of money out of my bum. Should I join a frat?

Frats are good for 3 things: drinking too much, dropping out of college and contracting STDs. Good stuff.

No, stay in your house. You should save whenever possible, and frats are for d-bags.

Well I personally love the idea of being able to stay in my house while in college, so that would be my suggestion to you. But if you don't want to, I doubt all frats are the cliched jock party houses they're made out to be. I'm sure you can find a more respectable frat. And if you can, go ahead and do that. If you can't though, don't disgrace yourself and join a crappy frat.

Frat is basically a way of saying "brotherhood" (fraternity).
It's a male-only college group, I do believe.

Anyway, to the OP:
A lot of frats apparently have initiation ceremonies (involving womens clothing and sex or so I hear), it might just be better to get a part-time job.

Frats are good for two things: Stealing shit and Killing Pledges with Alcohol Poisoning. So if that is your cup of tea then go right ahead.

It depends what your drinking habits and lifestyle are like. Firstly, I was unaware that any nerd-frats existed. It just seems like an oxymoron to me. Secondly, if you like to drink and party go for it. I know it sounds like I'm generalizing the demographic but its an incredibly accurate stereotype.
Myself, I'd never join a frat. I'm not anyone else though.

All I know is that every frat guy I've met in college has been a complete douchenozzle.

I would say no because usually you have to totally humiliate your self to get in one and that just makes everyone pricks who wanna do the same to the new new members. I'm probably wrong tho, all my knowledge of frats comes from American teen movies.

I can understand the appeal of certain fraternities, especially ones related to a particular major, what with the academic network and the connections for future prospects and what not. I do question whether it's worth being forced to ingratiate yourself with and become permanently beholden, socially and financially, to a bunch of people who you may or may not even like.

Only if you can pledge Lambda Lambda Lambda. At least they're friendly and reasonable walking stereotypes.

A frat is an organization of chavs at university. Hopefully my Yank/Briton translation skills are up to par.

Find a respectable one. Believe me, there are some.
Just don't join a Party Frat.

Start you own, ultra-cool, ultra-exclusive Fraternity, but make the entrance requirements a closely guarded secret for Frat members only.

Divulging these secrets would be punishable by immediate expulsion from the Fraternity, as well as the other, hideous, twisted, unmentionable punishments.

That way you'll be the only member and have a douchbag free Frat house.

Souplex House has a good ring to it.

My God... If they had showbiz outfits and Jazz-Hands I'd swear they were Minstrels.

Are they from 'Delta-Beta Al Jolson House'?
