I hear a lot of people complaining lately that games aren't as fun as they used to be. Things are getting to gritty and over the top with violence while ignoring the imaginative settings and characters. The games now days aren't as fun as they used to be and have changed into blood-filled gritty war blasters. Chainsawing mutants apart while blood spatters onto the screen, sweet!

Creative Fun games:
Conker: Bad Fur Day
Psychonaughts
Killer 7
Oddworld
Bioshock

Tough Awesome Gritty Games:
Gears Of War
Condemned
Doom
Turok
(Actually pretty much all FPS's of today)

So what is it? Would you rather be shouting for more crative games where you can leave your imagination at the door or some manly tough games where you fight bears with knives?

Or Half Life?

I'm confused, for the third time today in fact.

Are you saying that the creative games require no imagination, while the gritty ones do?

Half-Life. For the win.

But seriously, it depends on the game. I love both, but we're lacking on the fun, creative types for most of the major consoles. Apart from you rich buggers with the PS3 who're getting LittleBigPlanet, grr...

Huh. I screwed up. I mean creative games with imagination while gritty once have less but have an awesome factor about them.

The Half-Life series is fun, creative, colorful, raw, manly, brutal, AND AWESOME!
But seriously, why have a preference when the option for both exists? Why shouldn't it? I'd say No More Heroes and Killer 7 are examples of this, but then, I haven't played either. Yahtzee just seems to describe them in a way that fits all seven descriptions.

neither, I prefer games that scare the sh*t out of me. games such as STALKER appeal to me, because it has a choice to fight bears, but it's mostly being scared of fighting said bears because they are:

[li]not actual bears, but mutants[/li]
[li]much, much stonger than you or the bears that you want to fight in most other FPS games[/li]
[li]fight in packs that always fight to the last limping, bleeding animal[/li]

so in the end, the only way to win a fight is to either be able to consistently headshot multiple targets using weapons that are less accurate than a WWII machine-gun, or plan the fight and attack them using tactics (such as keeping 95 medkits on your person at all times).

I guess that that puts me in the "tactical shooter/survivalist shooter" group, but I also loved portal, which, while not exactly being all that colourful (aperture science white, grey, and beige being the most common colours) still required imagination.

Some games can be awesome AND fun as I'm sure Brutal Legend will be.

Lets go with the boring games. Why? So we can enjoy ourselves when we complain about them on the internet.

Why can't creative games be brutal and violent? If I had to choose, I'd say creative, simply becuase I have my share of brutal. For now.

Ok, I did the first post in a bit of a rush so I gave it an ol' edit so everyone knows where their head's at.

*First thought this meant something that wasn't overdone*
If a game can't be fun and awesome at the same time, it shouldn't try either.

That said, Fun every time. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Oh, or Half-life. :-D

If it's not fun, it's not awesome.

If you do not understand this, you need to recalibrate your awesomometers. Viewing of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the industry approved method for doing so.
