Wow, this thread actually interests me, as I have just started a social science course and have spent the past 13 weeks running through all this.

Im going to have to say conflict. tellmeimaninja pretty much summed it up perfectly, alot of people are far more interested in serving themselves then the overall community and society.

Marxism. In an ideal world consensus would be achievable but since it is not and the current social structure is weighed heavily in favour of the dominant class I would say Marxism seems like the only logical approach.

Strange, i have a politics exam tommorow and out of all the political theories we've covered (Realism, Liberalism, Constuctivism, Post-Colonalism and Marxism) we've never touched functionalism. I've come across it in books but since it's not on the course i've never read into it.

With regards to consesous and conflict, i think there is both in the world to roughly equal measure.
