The bigger part of it (from what I have seen and heard, mind you) is that there is a very 'fetish' side to the fandom. Heck, I've even seen links to it on Youtube when I was getting my techno fix.
The fetish side eather grosses people out (for it's link to beastiality and animals), confuses them, or just makes them freak out.
I really don't understand it so much myself. All I know is that I enjoy reading webcomics and some of the ones I've ran into use anthromorphic (I think that's the term) characters instead of human ones, and I still enjoy reading them. So go figure.

As to the people who play Taruens or Worgan, I dunno. Maybe, in some cases, but there may be other people who play them for the same reason that some people play as lizardfolk or Half-Dragons in DnD: For the racial bonuses.
