yes, i beleive that games need good plots. i hate it when your killing random things for no reason at all or for a shitty one. sure gameplay is more important than story..sometimes. however story is also increadibly important.

Pretty much the only reason I play games is for plot. If they were 80 hour movies where I only had to stop to make choices on what my person does, that would be awesome.

I feel bad when a game with a really good story has infuriating gameplay...I end up giving up and missing the awesomeness.

The days of heres a gun and over there monsters go shoot them, is over. If the gaming industry wants to be taken more seriously they need to come up with good plots.

I love games with or without plots. It doesn't bother me when there is no deep rich storyline.
Many of the old games didn't come with a plot or that the plot was shallow.
Come on Super Mario Bros. was very shallow in storyline department, just a plumber wanting to get the princess.
Even better, Pac-Man has absolutely no plot, yet it had an addictive flavor that keep people eating power pellets and evading ghost.
I understand when a game tries to make a good storyline and it has a shallow plot, but as long as a game has good gameplay I'm happy. I do understand also that it's just me that good games are really about the gameplay and the overwhelming feeling I get every time I save the princess, get in the top five on the high score, or that reach the end of the game. I think everyone lifts their standards too high for any game developer to get a perfect score, especially on the little things such as graphics, sound, and/or a storyline that is not rich.
(I only consider these things to be an additive flavor in a game that has great gameplay and replayability.)

In the modern culture, yes. Plot is important.

Overall? No. Not really.

I point to Tetris and Galaga.

Plot is important, but not when it starts to intrude in on my precious gameplay.

I choose a game depending on it's story, I won't buy a game that looks like it has no plot or so little plot that it is basically nonexistent. However I will play ANY type of game as long as the story is good enough.

Obviously not every game needs a story or plot.

They tried a plot for Tetris on the xBox and it made me vomit. And I'd go as far as to say that you don't need story for RTS games either. I don't know about you all, but when I play AoE, for example, it's straight to skirmish for me. Screw the story. Racing games too. Just put me in a fucking car!!!

Aside from those (and others I'm sure I've neglected) I think a game needs a story. It's like watching a movie where you get to act out the action scenes. Each level, among other things, is just the way to unlock the next "cinematic experience."

This isn't a constant, though. Let's use Halo as an example. I love the Halo story. I mean love. I've played each game a few times and read all the books. Some of them more than once. That being said, maybe my favourite thing about the games is the multiplayer. It's a fun experience. You're in charge of what happens. It's not scripted and every game is completely different.

So I prefer and enjoy a story but they're not needed.

You need a good story to keep players interested...although Asteroids had no storyline and I played for hours! :)

Yes, I love good plots, and will often bypass enemies just to get to cinematics. This often poses a problem in most RPG's though, and I will often hit the smashing roadblock known as the next boss blocking me from the plot.

That's funny, I would have thought that everyone here loved TF2 since yahtzee liked it. It's pretty thin on plot

It depends completely on the game. I find rpgs should have at least loose plots, since they are technically a book in a game. However I don't believe Tetris and Pong need one.

I'm in between one and two. Games like Mass effect and Bioshock and Half Life 2, need a good story to keep them going. But games like Gears of War just need it to get to the next stage of BANG BANG SHOOTY CHAINSAWness.

Yes, except for the multi-player heavy games like Starcraft. Because a lot of people are good at starcraft, but have never completed the campaign, so to me it's like a waste of money releasing SC 2 in 3 games because of the plot.

A few genres can get by without them ie sports, but having a lackluster plot is bad game making. Hence System Shock 2's superiority over Bioshock.

You rock for saying that. I agree because I grew up on Lucas Art's point and click adventure games.

pac-man was a good game, according to some people.
freeform RP can be fun.
bioshock was a great game. (almost makes me wish i was old enough to have played system shock series)

you can have a good game with a crappy or nonexistent story, and you can have a good game with crappy or no (why i mention freeform RP) gameplay, but to be a great one, you need both, and they have to be good.
