Does UESP count?
Yep, that's certainly a wiki :D Read bits of it myself, but didn't get deep enough into the game to really read large chunks of it, but enough of it to remember reading it lol.

they're not so good when it comes to actual tips regarding gameplay
Some wikis have gameplay related info that is actually useful - but that generally pertains to MMOs and RPGs where the gameplay is rather expansive. More FPS-type games tend to have backstory, bestiary, cheats and other such info.
Depends which wikis you haunt :D

I've read a few, I'll look up information (The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Wiki is very, very well done even if it is in need of a little clean up), and every now and then, I'll find a spelling mistake or inaccuracy that I'll feel the need to correct (I've been most active on the Dragon Age wiki, but this is true with the Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed wikis as well).

I love them. I myself tend not to have the level of attention to detail that contributors have, but I'm glad they can share the information with others.
Yeah - sometimes I don't have the attention to follow everything that is going on, and I play the game for fun, then read about it after to fill in the gaps in my head.
I remember some of the WoW storylines suddenly make a lot more sense after visiting the wiki.
I think if I go back to WoW I'm going to finally install a mod to change the quest text font - the ingame font I don't find very legible, even though it does go with the game's style. Won't stop me from losing interest now and again though lol.

I read wikis from time to time. Mostly when I'm bored or need a hint in a particular area.

I usually go when I need to find some obscure fact. Then I'm stuck there for the next 2 hours. It's like TVtropes.

Bulbapedia, sometimes Star Wars wiki. I just read, I bow to the superior knowledge of the wiki people.

Sometimes. Most often for Bioware-style RPGs. Half for useful info, half for extra flavor, dialogue I didn't hear in-game, story-type stuff.

Wikis are my first port of call if I need informaton on a game, or even if I'm just bored and fancy browsing the lore of Mass Effect. They're easily the most consistently comprehensive sources for information, although some of them are lacking. The Fable 2 wiki was very bare when I checked it, although to be fair the game hadn't been out all that long.

FFXIclopedia has helped me the most, and I've lost hours just scouring its pages.

I both edit and use "Bulbapedia", which is actually a pokemon encyclopedia, not a gardening website ;-)

I don't contribute myself, because in order to do that, I would have to feel like I know enough about the subject - "enough" being "more than the other people who are here". When I stumble upon a wiki, it's usually because I'm looking for something, and I have a question - not the answer.

I used the Mass Effect wiki for both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, and it helped immensely (especially the planet maps that soothed the agony of using the Mako in the first game). I always end up reading more than I planned... and sometimes more than I should, because I tend to spoil the game for myself. Urgh, very bad habit right there.

Lol, I visited there once to make a list of Pokemon for a chatbot addon I made, and then suddenly a few people thought I was a Pokemon expert for making the addon ><

For the record, I know practically nothing about Pokemon.

Reading through the replies, it seems a lot of people are like me... end up looking up something, then suddenly find a few hours of their life has gone missing lol.

I often read game wikis, especially Mass Effect and UESP wiki. Used to be an admin at Zeldapedia, but then gradually went to being an inactive user.
