It's a long standing debate....satisfying gameplay or a good story. Choose which you prefer in a game and end the debate once and for all!

You can have a game without story but you can't have a game without gameplay regardless of what Kojima says.

A shitty story can be excused as long as it's a fun game. If I had a game with an amazing story but terrible gameplay, I'd just drop it and go read a book.

A story is nice, and gameplay is essential after all, its a game right? Anyways, if both can be combined in a wonderful concoction Like Half-Life and such, Im all for both!

I do like a storyline that gets me involved. And bad characters can make a game intolerable. I'm looking at you, Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

Sad but true. Personally though, I prefer the story over gameplay. I can overlook any glitches or a broken feature (such as combat) so long as the story is compelling enough that I forget about it.

If I wanted an amazing story, I'd read a book. If I play a game, I want to have fun. So if a game has an incredibly story but is not fun to play, then it fails, in my opinion.

That's not to say games can't have good stories. It's just that gameplay should always come before story.

Gameplay is much more important. If a game is fun, the story can be excused, but if the gameplay is horrible and the story is great, perhaps another form of media would better execute it.

Topic is old as fuck, new content please.

Gameplay. Anyone who says that story is more important than gameplay might as well just go watch a gorramn movie.

Good gameplay can make up for a bad story. The best story in the world can't make up for crap gameplay.

Not quite. This is his/her very first post. I'm amazed that someone's first post would be a forum thread though. And yeah, we get too many of these threads. If anyone was following this site for more than a week, then they'd know how often we get these.

Edit: last thing. Welcome to the Escapist! I can't really think of a good intro right now, but someone might come along eventually with the "official" introduction. Enjoy your stay and have fun.

I can play either and throughly enjoy myself, but I prefer a good story. Although many games with good stories have little to no replay value.

This sums up my opinion perfectly. There are plenty of games without a story per see, like Audiosurf, any puzzle game, any shooter(you don't play those for the story, do you?), and pretty much any RTS.

If I wanted a story I have books and anime.

I find a good story compels ke a lot more than just fun gameplay. On less story intense games I tend to play maybe an hour or two then take a break(unless is multiplayer, which I can play for hours on end). But if the story is engaging I won't notice the when the sun comes up. I normally finish 40+ hour RPGs faster than 10 hour action games.

both are important; if one is bad, the other can make up for it if it is good enough.

Planescape Torment was more or less a glorified choose-your-own adventure book, and I love that sincerely as well as The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, both of which had miserable gameplay but fantastic story and both of which I also count among my all time favorite games.

So it'd be a bit hypocritical of me to choose Gameplay.

That said not every game needs a story. Mount & Blade is a game I love, and it has no story to speak of and is little more -than- gameplay, fortunately the gameplay is so good I just keep coming back. That's only one example.

Why can't we just have both?
