I was wondering, many of the more artistic games are making artistic statements. Should this trend continue and what games do it particualarly well, or not.
And yes, I realize artistic is being overused here.

Mixing art with games is great. The problem is that many developers make the game off balanced in favor of art rather then gameplay. I play video games, so gameplay comes first. If I want a passive artistic statement, I would watch a movie.

Team Fortress 2 is today's best statement of incorporating art into the game-play. If it's not such a combination, graphics are not a necessity; they should be an afterthought.

Is anyone really going to buy a bad game simply because it's artsy? or conversely, refuse buy a good game because it has art?
Well, if you consider that some games with gameplay flaws might be better with a statement or two, then I would hope so. And I certainly hope that nobody would ever avoid a game because there is art. I just want to know as a matter or preference.

I'm afraid I don't fully understand your question. By art do you mean a skin-deep graphical statement or one entrenched deep in the core of the game such as...oh I don't know please give me an example of some sort.

Ok, I think I would have to say the latter. However the former plays a great role in the latter. Prime examples: Bioshock or anything by Suda 51.

Sometimes, the art can only exist in the form of a game.

Games can be art, and more games should try to make artistic statements. However, they exist to be an enjoyable interactive medium and they shouldn't try to be artistic for the sake of being artistic.
