In a liniar story then yes. Some books based on the Warhammer universe would make good/great games as the ps2 game Fire Warrior taught us.

However I think games would make a good medium to expand on modern literature. Say for example a book is released with a game allong side it. Instead of following the main plot the game follows to story of a say a side character maybe going into a backstory. This could also work the other way around.

The Stalker series were based on the novel "Roadside Picnic" by Boris Strugavsky and I LOVED those games.
I've read a few accounts of Vietnam- "Steel my Soldiers Hearts" by Col. David Hackworth was a great book and a game based on his accounts and experiences would be good- or maybe just a game on Vietnam- I haven't come across any myself.

Fantasy books often lend themselves to games quite easily it just depends on how the games developer makes the game really- a great deal of fantasy books have the framework and backstory to make great games- look at LOTR- it has a endless scope for games to be made from it, some of them sucked bad but some were pretty cool.

What I would like to also see is Norse Mythology come into play- having read books by Alan Gibbons as a child- which involves a kid getting trapped in a game from different mytholgies- one was Roman Mythologies, one was battling Vampires and the other was Norse Mythology, and I think that having a game that encompasses Nordic Mythology would be cool- as those tales were always the most fascinating and they have great game potential.

I know Too Human was based on it but I want traditional Nordic games not a framework

I think The Trial by Franz Kafka would make an excellent survival horror. The monsters would be minor bureaucrats, and rather than disemboweling you, they just want to talk about your case at mind-numbing length. (And in the end, you always die.)

The Malazan books of the fallen series by Steven Erikson would make an epic game, seeing as the books are epic as in having a immensly large, well thought out and original setting nad world. Would make a decent open world RPG or even a linear game, it could let you play as one of the over powered pale amd pasty immortals with issues... hmmm sounds like game an exsisting game charecter, just with more clothes on

I'd like to see a first-person action game loosely based on Blindsight.

Dune as an action/RPG would be shwiggidie shweet (I am well aware of the RTSs).

I'd love to see some great Sci-Fi books made into games (of equal quality).
yeah, i would like enders game and sphere
Ender's game would be interesting - I would imagine something almost like an RTS (except like how you use strategy in Dragon's Age) - as well as you'd be before Ender obviously.

There's a series of books I read when I was a teenager called The Seventh Tower that I think would work fairly well as RPG-type games.

(as for The Road, wasn't that basically Fallout 3? Or---worse---Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, one of the most depressing games I've ever played?)
It'd be like Fallout 3 if every person you met was a raider, and there were no towns or missions. Except for the constant escort mission.

So it wouldn't be very fun, but it does have ability to move people to tears.

FUND IT.

Specifically, Dark Corners of the Earth was based on HP Lovecrafts 'Shadow over Innsmouth'

On that note, I'd really like there to be more Cthulhu mythos based games. Or a film for that matter (there are some, and they are prodominantly aweful). Dark Corners of the Earth was a very solid investigative/horror game. It cant be said that style of game is the best of genres, but it does itself proud and I think the Mythos would benefit strongly from modern generation tech. Dynamic lighting, rolling fog/smoke and rich environments would all go a long way to making a real experience. Thats not even mentioning finally having enough polygons available to create the many limbed fanged abominations featured in his work.

More generally speaking unfortunately, I dont think there are enough titles that would really work. Many of the themes prominent in literature are dificult to convey in a meaningful way in a game.

My favourite books have already been turned into games (Discworld and HhgttG), so I'm sure it's possible, but only if it doesn't follow the story of the books too rigidly. A semi-seperate story in the same universe, or an untold story of related characters, kind of thing. Might be interesting.

Some works of Stephen King (notably The Dark Tower, of course) and Neil Gaiman come to mind.
