I'm sure many people here on the Escapist have a girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband and that some of these significant others also play games, I am curious as to how many of us on here play games with our significant others and what games these are.

My girlfriend and I play a lot of the old Megadrive games together (namely Streets of Rage and Sonic 2) and I'm slightly embarassed to say that she usually does much, much better than me.

NOTE: I did use the search bar and the only topics I found were about people trying to get their girlfriends into gaming and a guy who married a girl from a videogame in Japan.

Single at the moment, but I guess it would depend on whether they liked games or not. I wouldn't force anything.

My boyfriend and I play games together. Unfortunately he has very few 2 player games so if I'm at his place it's usually a case of one watching and one playing. I shall be forcing him to play more multiplayer games next time he's here though.

Yeah, we played Bioshock together (pass the controller style), wii games and the LEGO games. I love that my girl is a gamer, it's because of that I can have all the major consoles as well as us having a Mac and a gaming PC. I don't think a non-gamer girlfriend would be likely to tolerate that sort of gaming extravagance.

SAY WHAT!?!
Only the trolls have significant others!!!

More or less OT: Tried to play a free-to-play mmo with a... complication in my life once. I got bored extremely fast.
I just realized that this thread could turn into a whinefest about female gamers. Just remember to bring the grapes!

No, I'm single. If I wasn't, though, I wouldn't play games with her. Chances are, she wouldn't want to play.

Yeah, bloody lego games...

I want to play a lot of games with my girlfriend but she only likes certain games, like lego indiana jones for instance. She's not very good at games which puts her off shooters and stuff, and she gets afraid of other games. It ends up being a single player game which she'll play and I'll just sit there, after a few hours it gets pretty boring. She's not very good at using both hands, and just gets bored before improving. On a PC game she'll use 1 finger for WASD, enough said really. We only play games at mine cos I have the xbox and a decent PC, if I'm unlucky enough to go to hers, her idea of gaming together involves me watching her play the sims for several hours.. (it isn't the other way around though, I never just go on a game when someone else is there and make them watch, it's multiplayer or they play)

I'd really like some more games to play with her but there's not much choice. In terms of Co-Op games there's the lego series which I personally dislike (they're the same shit.. you go into a level and smash everything up and do some crappy mini-mission), halo is an fps and she doesn't like it, she wanted to get RE5 which she then found too scary to play, Fable 2 is a single player with 2nd player stapled on last minute. Any game that is just me v her isn't good either because she doesn't like to lose, and if she wins then she knows it's because I'm doing it on purpose and gets annoyed at that as well. Any suggestions?

I know this may sound like a bad idea to you but try getting (or renting, whatever) a wii. My girl has gotten a lot better but had and still has many of the problems that you mentioned. The wii has a much more casual demographic in mind and games like New Super Mario Brothers or Wii Sports (or Resort) may be just the thing for you two to play together. It certainly helped with us. I realize a new console is a major investment but if you really want to game with your girl it might be just the thing. Cheers.

Maybe you should try a multiplayer puzzle game or something consisting on minigames. If you have a wii I find that the Rayman Raving Rabbids games are quite fun and my friend who isn't much of a gamer has a great time playing them too. This doesn't really help with her not liking to lose, but maybe she'll get good enough at something to beat you sometimes.

Hmm perhaps you two are right. Fortunately I do have a wii, it gathers dust under my desk. Maybe if I get a cable for it to go into my monitor and look into some games.

Any other wii games you can suggest? I completed New Super Mario Bros with my mate who had it at my student house, not sure it's worth buying a game i've already beat even though it'd be a good multiplayer. Rayman Raving Rabbids could be good.

Me and my boyfriend play MW2 online, he doesnt play any other games. Having said that, IMO theres not many games with a decent co-op anyway. Plus I prefer RPGs.

I personally have Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party and it's rather fun. It's especially good in party mode if you have multiple friends over. It also has a couple of shooter games if you want to try to get her to like shooters more, and they're kinda cute so she won't get scared by anything. There's also some dance games in it so if she likes dancing she might like those (I don't like dancing and I still like them) also you could watch her play it and and possibly get to see some boob-jiggle.

My girlfriend hates games (except a Bust-A-Move clone on her phone), and, despite my protestations that it'd be really hot and awesome stated "I don't wanna be the kind of girl who plays games all the time." I... don't really know what that means since her best friends *are* massive girl gamers, but whatever :):)

Sure, now keep in mind that these are the best games for couples that I can think of not just the best games.

Mari Kart Wii
Rayman Raving Rabbids (already suggested)
Guitar Hero (if you're willing to pony up the dough for the peripherals)
Boom Blox and Boom Blox: Bash Party
Mario Galaxy 2 (has a somewhat weak multiplayer option but it's there, read up on it before you buy)
Animal Crossing: City folk (While not actually multiplayer you can leave each other mesages craft the town together etc.)
Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree
My Sims
Tiger Woods Golf games
Mario Party or Wario Ware(Just a bunch of minigames, kinda gimmicky)

This is a pretty big list and I recommed that you check out reviews first but these are all low intimidation games that may settle your girl into gaming. Keep in mind that once she is comfortable you can encourage her to play more traditional titles that are for the "hardcore" audiences. I started my girl off like this and now she's playing Batman: Arkham Asylum, Alan Wake (though she might be too scared to finish but she likes it) and Red Dead Redemtion.

Also if you're just trying to get her to game then get yourself a copy of The Legend of Zelda Windwaker and a GC Memory card . . and a GC controller (I know, I know . . .) because more than anything that is the title that turned my girl into a gamer. She played that one twice in a row! Also, I popped it in the other day and was shocked at how well it's aged. It still looks as charming as ever, maybe more.

Okay, I hope this novella of a post helps. Cheers friend.

Ah a good list. I've got guitar hero 3 and it's alright, it's been a while since I played it but she might want to play it - don't think it's worth buying another guitar though. Got Wario Ware too but nah too minigame and gimicky. It seems there's a choice of gimmicky party games or single players. It'd probably be better if I gave her the wii.. but being quite a suprising birthday/christmas present from my brother (he loves to buy gadgets and not use 'em), I couldn't possibly part with it.
