Greetings fellow escapists,

For no reason other than the fact that I was pissed off about not being able to play COD online, I decided to buy a good single player game and settled on Mass Effect 2. I didn't expect it, but I got completely sucked in and now all I want to do is play action RPGs. Problem is, the other games "like" ME2 seem to generally get terrible rep. What game would you recommend to a player who wants to have a story/dialogue driven action experience like ME2.

Don't think there are any other RPG's that play like Gears of War.

But Alpha Protocol is probably the closest you'll get, if you spec Thorton for combat.

I can't think of any (Mass Effect 2 is a singular experience - although Mass Effect 3 looks like it's going to come back just as strong), but if anyone else does, I'd love to hear the name.

Even if I already have plenty of games to play this summer...

Crap there's supposed to be a poll attached, but really all is said was DA2, Alpha protocol, Recommend a different game, and Resume COD until ME3 comes out.

Mass Effect is made by BioWare. Look into their games. The ones that are on consoles:
-Knights of the Old Republic (the sequel is good too, but buggy and with a rushed ending. It was made by Obsidian)
-Jade Empire
-Dragon Age: Origins
-Dragon Age II

You might also want to try Alpha Protocol. It's not squad-based, and it got horrible press at its launch. Some patches have improved the gameplay and I loved it.

First of all, if you liked Mass Effect 2, go and play Mass Effect 1. Doing it in that order might colour your poinion on ME1's combat a little negatively, but honestly, there are few games out there better at getting you 'completely sucked in'.

I can't really think of any games 'like' Mass Effect 2 off the top of my head. Most games tend to go either heavy shooter or heavy RPG, rather than try to find a happy union between the two. The best I can thing of is Fallout3/New Vegas and Bioshock, in the sense that they are open world RPG's with heavy shooter elements, but their gameplay and aesthetic is not like ME2 at all.

I would recommend ME 1, but you've gone and played 2 first. It's kind of hard for new people to go back to 1 from 2 because of the more-polished game-play. It's hard to say if there's anything like ME 2, it's fairly unique. Oddly Alpha Protocol is the only game I can think of and it's really sub-par. (Though I have it and enjoy it, but I'm kind of weird like that.)

Um, maybe you could find a copy of Deus Ex, and if you're not too picky about the series, Deus Ex: Invisible War. (I know people who just vomited up a lung, it's not as good as Deus Ex, but it's less importent to people who've not enjoyed the franchise, plus it would be freaking dirt cheap by now.) They're from last generation and beyond, but they're action-y.

I would do that in a second, but unfortunately I don't have a 360 or gaming computer.

KOTOR one and two are very similar. They are tricky to run on Windows 7 though, KOTOR II simply won't on mine.

Unless you really want a shooter, there are are lots of awesome action rpgs out there.

What platform are you on?

For instance, Jade Empire is only on 360 or PC (afaik).

Also, are you sucked in by the story more than the mechanics, or vice versa?
If story, go with stuff like Mass Effect 1 or Knights of the Old Republic.
If mechanics, go with stuff like Bayonetta or Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Dialogue/story-driven WRPGs on the PS3 aside from ME2?

That's a good question, actually. Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 are by the same developer and should available for your console. Writing and storytelling is fairly similar, though the combat is completely different from Mass Effect.

There's also Demon's Souls. It has practically no dialogue or exposition, but if you want a good action RPG, it's the very best.

I'm on PS3 only and it was most certainly the story/dialogue system that won me over. The mechanics were good, but frankly I've played better. I also don't really care if it's a shooter or not.

I'm not really into the whole fantasy RPG thing and I find the pickings fairly slim on the current generation of consoles.

Fallout 3 & New Vegas are both pretty solid shooter RPGs. Neither has the smooth combat of ME2.

ME1 is kind of the uncoordinated, more intelligent brother of ME2. Better story and obsessed with micro-managing everything except ammo (infinite ammo for everybody), and a pretty sloppy combat mechanic.

And Alpha Protocol... which I can only describe as a noble failure. Great conversation system and once you get past the first couple of missions (thus leveling up your character enough to effectively use a gun), the action is pretty good.

I would love to check out KOTOR, but don't really feel like playing it on the PC and I tend to steer clear of original Xbox games since the backward comparability is usually on the dodgey side.

In that case, err ... prepare not to be as impressed with any other game out there.
I'd like to recommend Dragon Age: Origins .. but frankly the gameplay is mediocre on console. If you can get it at a low-ish price, though .. it's worth a look.

I know some people may like to name sandboxy games such as Fallout 3 .. but by their very nature they're disjointed and poorly paced.

Even though you don't have a "Gaming" computer, I would still give Knights of the old republic a try. I first played it on a computer with Windows 98' and thought it was the most amazing game I had ever played, the second one as well. The dialogue and immersion is similar to mass effect, but the combat is different in many ways and similar in many ways. Fast forward 5 years and I played mass effect 2, and instantly got sucked in.

I'm sure you'd be able to run Knights of the Old Republic on your computer. My last computer was just run-of-the-mill bought straight from Best Buy and not intended for gaming, but I could play both KotOR I and II on it. And that was...four years ago (and it was about 3 years old at that point).

I have KotOR II and play it on my 360. There is one glitch that I get, but it would happen in about two or three minute intervals for the entirety of the game. It was just this really short noise that sounded like TV static. It was annoying for a while, but I stopped noticing it eventually. I did a search and found that it's a pretty common problem.

I don't know about the first game. I have it for my Macbook and it runs fine.

If you're not TOO focused on a very well developed RPG-game and could live with something more Gears Of War-ish, you can try Dark Void (buggy, and the story is a bit meh, but it's based on the Unreal engine just like ME and the gameplay is pretty adequate, plus the jetpack is awesome) or Vanquish (very fast-paced, takes the story a bit too seriously and has a few cheap boss fights, but definitely good for an adrenaline-filled night of gaming).

As far as action-RPG's go, the PS3 isn't exactly the best console. Demon's Souls is a rather well-made Action-RPG, but the story is very open-world and more in the vein of Oblivion, where you need to basically discover the story for yourself, and the difficulty level is insanely high.
Bioshock does have RPG elements and an extremely good story, though it's a first-person shooter. If you want squad-based action-RPG's, you really are mostly forced into Bioware games: DA:Origins, DA2, ME2. DA:Origins is a bit lacking on the PS3 though, the controls feel a bit stripped compared to the PC version.

If you're a fan of superheroes, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 is very close to being an RPG, it has elements very similar to older isometric dungeon crawlers, and the story is pretty well done for a comic book game. (And Deadpool is the most hilarious character in the history of the Marvel universe.)

If you are a patient gamer (This also would apply to Demon's Souls), you could try Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, though it does have more in common with MMO's than most action-RPG's. It's very similar to the games Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms, which themselves are somewhat like Diablo or Gauntlet.

And as everyone else has mentioned, Alpha Protocol, which is probably the best choice for an RPG game, as it lets you have free reign over almost every situation in ways many games could only fathom. All of the other games I've mentioned are more action-based than story-based (Aside from Bioware's games, obviously, and arguably Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2).

There IS also Nier, a Square Enix game. As a wise man once said, the combat is functional if a bit boring*, and the characters are slightly above average.
*I enjoy the combat, though it is rather unpolished. And the story does seem to have a small amount of self-parody in itself, so if you can read between the lines really well, you could find it very amusing.

And I guess you could also consider Fallout 3/New Vegas, or possibly The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, for a more sandbox-y type of game.

EDIT: I doubt the PSN is up or anything, but there's also DeathSpank, a comedic action-RPG made in the style of a graphic novel with gameplay similar to Diablo.
And I hesitate to say it, but you could also attempt to try Two Worlds II, which is another fairly open-world game, but it does have a fairly. . . unique story, until it gets bogged down by all of the side-quests that a lot of WRPG's have.

Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas, maybe. Some people didn't like it, and it wasn't as nuanced as earlier Fallout games (e.g. the stat system was unbalanced), but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
