I am sure that this topic has been thrown around in the past, however, I just wanted to get your opinions on it. Lately I have played mw2 and then went straight to Star Ocean: The second story. Today I am getting Bioshock 2 and will be playing that. I must say that I have played a fair amount of both old games (ranging all the way from the original mario, pacman and Zelda) to the new games (mw2, bioshock 2 (soon)ect.) In my personal opinion I view that games coming out today are just "used". I view everygame coming out as just "an addition to the last game" or "Exactly the same as this other game only with a few new features". Things like that. So overall, I view the older games as better games, however, that does not stop me from playing the newer games either.

Basically I want your opinion; Do you like older games better, or newer games better? Why so?

tl;dr Old games or new games?

SO:Second Story was so much fun...

Anyways, I went with older. More or less because I'm an adventure game junkie.

I don't know. They both have their bad games and their good.
I mean, Ocarina of Time was awesome but so was Twilight Princess.
I'll just say I can't decide.

I'm going for the uncontroversial 'They're both good' option. There have been good and bad games recently and many years ago, as there always will be.

I too enjoy an accoasional retro game. For egzample, I've got to the 10th level of doom 2 yesterday, and deus ex 1 is my favourite game of all time.

Old games will allways have a special place in my heart, but let's admit it: new games are superior in every way.

So I guess I'll go for the "can't decide " option.

Some old games were fun, like Baldur's Gate, No One Lives Forever and the Thief series to name a few. They were games I had a lot of fun with back in the days and most of the time, their predecessors haven't lived up to the hype or just haven't been made (OFP is still better than both ArmA I/II and Dragon Rising).

But there are a lot of awesome new games coming out. Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2, Dragon Age.... New games are pushing the envelope in ways that the old games never did and are in many ways far better.

In the end, I am going to have to say new games, putting my trust entirely in that Heavy Rain will give me all that I wish had been in Fahrenheit.

Depends on how you mean, many people will say older because they came first. Whilst i would argue newer games have progressed the ideas, graphics, gameplay forward meaning surely they are better. A key problem is that it's hard to come up with new concepts now, considering most of it has already been done by some game in the past. Many people will actually consider any shooter is not as good as say half life because half life was first, no matter how good they are when compared side by side.

Nostalgia will play a key theme in this debate.

I like RPGs from the PS1 era more than most modern RPGs (outside of Oblivion).

Legend of Mana>>>>>>>>>>>>>Anything Bioware will ever do

New "every other genre" is better than old games of any other genre.

So, yeah. That sums it up.

Old game have far better replay value for some reason. I really only care about new RPGs these days.

There is a time for every game, but it doesn't have to end even in this generation.

If I want to take a trip back through time and play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, it is just as fun as playing any new AAA release today.

Though Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is going to be fucking sweet.

older games are better. they new what they wanted to be, they were fun, original, timeless, and kept you occupied for hours.

todays games fall very very short.

Well this is a surprising turn out... I expected more people to go with the older games, however, to everyone that has posted ITT so far, I don't disagree with any of you. Keep em coming though!
