I've never had a problem with them, nor the store in general. Luck of the draw for me, I guess.

They are nice and all, but...

"You want to preorder this? Or preorder this? Or Preorder this?"
"No, I'm good."
"Are you sure? If you preorder this, you can get this."

Happens to me everytime I go there. Really gets on my nerves.

Well the first thing to remember about retail employees is that they're whipping boys. You go in there and they're grumpy? Fundamental Attribution Error leads you to believe it's because they're dicks but they're probably not. They're probably pissed off because some harpy was screaming at them because it turns out the game she bought for her kid was too violent, or some bull-necked idiot spilt coffee on his DS and wants a refund. You just catch the tail end of that.

Retail employees also have an undeserved public reputation for being stupid and if I worked minimum wage and got called an idiot I might start feeling a little 'fuck all things' too.
I used to work fast food. Anything involving retail is a thankless job where no one seems to notice that those people are busting their asses trying to make our lives easier.

You wanna know why someone two places after you got their order before you did? Well, they didn't order 3 fucking 16-piece boxes of chicken!

As a former employee, I feel for those guys; I make sure never to give them a hard time as they've probably had enough.

My experiences (in the NYC area) have been so poor, I don't even shop there anymore: except at the Rockefeller Center where they seem okay.

Most of them seem really stupid...for retail clerks. I mean, I've never bought french fries at McDonalds and had the clerk hand me an empty carton. Something like that happened to meat gamestop (with a game case instead of a fries carton).
At the same store my wife's friend was actually laughed at when she asked if she could buy a wii fit. Sure, it was rare at the time but she's not a gamer and would have no way of knowing that.
It's the closest game store to my house (3 blocks away) but I never shop there anymore and I don't think anyone else does either. They Always have a banner for one sale or another out front leading me to believe they're overstocked.

In other words, they seem to be obnoxious douche-bags.
That same thing happened to my parents when they wanted to buy a Wii. It wasn't at a GameStop though, I forget where they said it was. Best Buy or Walmart maybe.

I don't really like going to the GameStop at the mall nearest to me. Almost every time I go there the employees never say a word to me. That doesn't bother me much though. What does is I've also had some of them just stare at me, to the point I get the feeling I'm not welcome there. The one that's farther away is much better, the people there are always friendly.

Well, I've never had any truly negative experiences at a Gamestop. If anything, I've generally found them to be pretty helpful, like that time when one worker was "kind" enough to point out the fact that Fallout: New Vegas was $20 off that day, making it well within my $40 budget, and I probably wouldn't have noticed the deal otherwise. So, I suppose that's a "like." Although, to be honest, I hardly ever go to Gamestop because the local Best Buy is a hell of a lot more convenient to get to on a normal day (Gamestop is about 30-minutes away and located inside a busy shopping mall, while Best Buy is practically down the road and located next to the grocery store I shop at, meaning I get a chance to visit it every Sunday).

I have no problem with them. They are people just doing their job trying to make some money.

I have a friend who used to work at one and HE hated it there.

My problem is not really their employees, but the way they're forced to try to make sales. I was there recently trying to buy a used game and after trying to cash out they spent a couple of minutes trying to sell me other stuff at which point I walked out.

I don't mind them asking if they can help. I mind when they get pushy about selling their disc protection program or other such nonsense.

I've never really had any problems with Gamestop employees. They've all been pretty friendly when I've been there. Hell, I even talked with one about Tales of Symphonia and Metroid.

I hardly ever go to gamestop because I find the company's business practice shady but from my limited experience with employees I think theyre just human beings doing their job. No different then the rest of us. Usually they seem friendly and ready to strike up conversation at any time but sometimes they have bad days too, just like everyone else.

I have definitely met more that I like than dislike. Most of them are pretty knowledgeable and polite. Though there are a few that don't have the first idea about the industry they are working in.

Our local employees are pretty great. Good people all around. Hell, one of them is even managed by a good friend of 25ish years who also runs a 1500+ people per year anime / videogame convention in my town.

It's good all around.

It really depends. I've regularly been to about five Gamestops in the country depending on where I lived (Orlando, FL; Baldwinsville, NY; and central North Carolina). I thought three of them were just fine. The employees were helpful, polite and knowledgeable. But two of them really emphasized the "hard sell" technique, so I made an effort never to shop there.

On one occasion, I was picking up a WoW 30-day gift card for a co-worker (Secret Santa ordeal), and the clerk kept trying to shove pre-orders down my throat despite the fact I said I wasn't interested in any. I even told him I worked at a rival game store, so I would get my own pre-orders from there, and the only reason I was shopping there was because my store didn't sell WoW subscription cards. After offering me a fifth pre-order, I tossed the card away for him to pick up and walked out.

Still, I'm sure that's the exception rather than the rule. The Gamestop near my house has perfectly good employees, so I'm satisfied.

I have never had a bad experience with them. Just the usual questions (things like if I want to buy the guide book for the game I am buying, or upgrade my gamestop card).

Yeah, I used to work in a DIY store, before that was an off license and after that was a petrol station. People are such dicks to those in retail, it's untrue what you have to put up with, it really is.

I think it should be a law that everyone has to work a few years in retail to make them appreciate the practicalities of working in customer relations. I think the poor girls on the till had it worst, customers would reduce them to tears. Funny how they'll do it to girls but the second the muscular and slightly annoyed young man asks what the problem is they suddenly find their manners.
I agree with this so much. I think everyone should be required to work in retail at some point in their lives. Even before I worked in retail it had always been my rule to be as polite as possible to people in the service industry because i could only guess at how much it sucked. Now that I have a job in reception/retail, I can verify: it really really sucks.

It's strange; once you're behind the counter or have your uniform on, it's almost like you're no longer human, because you're not allowed to make mistakes. People expect perfection from you even though you're just as human and capable of making mistakes as they are.

As for Gamestop, I haven't had any bad experiences with them. In fact the last time I was there I ended up with a free magazine. Yay free magazines!

The local Gamestop employee's are good enough folk. It's tough dealing with 7 year olds screaming at their dad's to make them buy video games. About the only bad thing about the store is that they play clips of the Big Bang Theory. Drives me insane.

Problem is in retail these days, there's a lot of pressure to upsell.

I work retail and the employees are often out-right lying to customers and often adding on the upsell items without their knowledge. They only cost .99 cents and the ticket prices are high enough not to be noticed. All this because corporate pushes managers to sell high-profit, low-cost items, often handing out prizes for it.

So, check your receipts anywhere there's pushy sales clerks.
