First, trading in a game at Gamestop is like is like brutally fisting the publisher while the developer is sobbing in the corner begging you to stop.

Second, selling it pretty much anywhere else would make you more money, and everyone knows selling used games is fine as long as Gametop doesn't profit, seeing as that results in the aforementioned atrocity.

Like all companies Gamestop sets their prices to maximize profit, their a business not a charity. Nobody is forcing you to trade in your games at Gamestop, If you do not like the price they offer you then you can ether sell through different means (like ebay,) or simply keep the game.

Gamestop is large enough to play the numbers game, and they're good at it.

X number of customers come in, looking to just dump off software they no longer care about. Almost anything could be offered, and they'll take it.

Y number of customers, on the other hand, might actually turn around and leave if they don't get what they consider to be a fair trade.

X + Y = Profit. Because Y tends to be a smaller number than X, they are what amounts to the "gravy", and GameStop will bump up their credit offer somewhat in order to entice more of Y to add their trades to X. But there's a diminishing return on that, because X also has to be paid the same amount and they were going to dump their games regardless of what they got (for many, "a sandwich" would be just fine).

So GameStop has found their point-of-equilibrium, where they get the most they think they can out of Y without cutting into their profits from X. And that's business for ya.

If you want a more realistic price for your games, sell them yourself. There are more than enough ways to do that without using Gamestop. Since Gamestop makes a huge part of it's profit with resales they will of course try to get as much out of it as possible.
