Crappy title, I know, Leave me alone ='(

I just saw an advert for Operation Flashpoint, and (excuse me for this, i'm tired, confused, and distracted) mistook it as an ad for MW2. I then rectified my mistake, but it got me thinking. Games are starting to become a bit similar. And no, I don't mean that I can't tell the difference between Guitar Hero and Halo. I mean that alot of FPS' seem to be doing the same thing, you know? Fighting of a conveniently un-named eastern scourge/rather familiar Japanese-German alliance? Same applies for other genres of games. Obvious choice would be RPG's, which pounce at the medieval setting.

Now, personally, it isn't a problem, if the game is done well, is fun, bla bla bla. But it can be a bit discouraging to see twenty games on a shelf and the only difference is the name. But then, I did buy CoD: WaW, and Oblivion. I guess it's done because the idea sells well...

What is your opinion on the topic? Provided you even have one, that is, seeing as this isn't really the biggest issue facing mankind. But hey, post your thoughts.

P.S - I love how the term "Samey" is catching on =D

There's a lot of difference between MW2 and Op Flashpoint 2. Most good games have something distinct about them that sets them apart.

The graphics in MW2 and OF2 are similar, but they're both trying to look realistic so...maybe the world is too samey?

Well shooters kinda of have always been the same when you get down to it, you shoot gun, person dies or object blows up. I do get what you mean though and I do agree.

RPG's aren't as bad but they are heading in the direction you stated.

Mostly FPSes, the others are ok. Seeing as I mostly play RPGs, I haven't really noticed it.

Yeah, it's kind of getting a bit Hollywood at times - seeing repeats of formulas that have been deemed successful. Space Marines are the obvious cliche, but I sometimes find when I go out and look at new games in a store, aside from big name titles, that I can't tell them apart. There'll usually be at least three or four other games that are indistinguishable from it.

On one level, I'm tempted to say that, maybe, it represents progress in the industry and they're looking to improve upon formulas that work well, but, speaking personally, I have to think that it's a lack of creativity, or a cynical marketing exercise. It's like how, when all MMOs effectively try to be WoW, the genre as a whole stagnates. Likewise, when almost all FPS's either try to be Halo or CoD, we don't see the great games that we used to get out of the genre, and it makes the originals stand out less among the clones.
