They got more brutal and have unneeded but cool enhancements like the cover system, but otherwise innovations have been shot down, like Mirrors Edge - A perfectly good game- but too short and "not enough violence for some", while other's didn't undestand that you had to build momentum. Other innovations have had such small audience.

That's my two pence (british sorry :) ).
The bad part of mirror's edge wasn't that it had too little violence but that, for the game, it had to much because it would have those sections where it forced you into combat when it was not meant to be a combat game, in that enemies that can take you down with dizzying speed when you can run from them and have to dodge bullets is great, but when you have to fight the same enemies that kill you as fast as Left 4 Dead fans hating it's sequel, it turns the game to a digital version of shoving a drill in your eye socket. As a platforming game, it was phenomenal, but it was by far the worst FPS in history.

Gaming has changed for the better, Nostalgia is for people who think there smarter than everyone else, "OH GAMES TODAY JUST ARENT AS CHARMING" Maybe not, but they look better, last longer, can be played with multiple people, provide many more jobs than before, Have chainsaws.

Xbox 360/ PS3 > any console of the past.

i don't know if they have really changed, more like the difference has become more stark. back in those days, the most hardcore action shooter was golden eye and lets face it, by today's standards, that would probably be rated E, maybe T if someone at the ESRB was having a bad day. And now we've gone from golden eye and sonic into a hardcore bloodbath and a casual kiddie minigame for kindergardeners and their moms.
WTF are you talking about? Doom and Wolfenstein came out years before Goldeneye and are way more violent and hardcore.
very true, but those are about it as far as truely hardcore games go, and that was all the choice you really had. pick what game you wish to insert but the result is the same. those games by today's standards with the pixelated blood splatter effects would be seen as "T" and not stand up at all in comparison to today's games.

Gaming has changed. There is more emphasis on sex and violence than ever before. People are calling for a push of better graphics more than a drive for better gameplay. Many video games made today cost several times more than games made 10 years ago, but the older games have more lasting appeal and many of them are still funner to play now than the new ones.

I have had/played almost every console in existence over the last 27 years, and I can say that I personally find more enjoyment in games made during the SNES and PSX era than I do in today's era. The feeling of games has changed. People place an emphasis on "wanting challenges" rather than simply having fun. It feels like competition drives a lot of players too. I miss the old days when I just played games for entertainment. You know, that word that used to be included in the freaking NAME of the console Nintendo Entertainment System or Family Computer because everyone in the family could play it.

Today, games are over the top, almost as expensive to make as movies and quite often just as disappointing as them. I feel like we're in the era of games that comics were in during the 80's when everything started "going sour" and the industry needs a swift kick in the ass to change gears again.
The games back then are considered good because there is a high nostalgic factor and not much more. i feel you can get what you want out of today's games. You can be a competitive prick who plays COD4 multiplayer all day trying to go a notch higher in the leader boards. or you can be like me, who plays games to relax and have fun with my friends. Getting too into the competition can ruin games in general, that why i say just sit back and enjoy it. if you want the challenge, the challenge is there, or you could give the challenge the finger and do whatever you want.

i wouldn't say there's an emphasis on violence, just that, once again, it's easier to see. because of today's graphics, all the violence is much more visceral now then it was when you had to use your imagination with the splatter of red pixels to find what the game was trying to do.

Games. Games never change.
" I don't want to set your gaaames ooon fiiiiire..."

In all seriousness, though, gaming has simply evolved and diversified into something for several audiences.
"I just want to play a really big gaaaaaaaame... Down in your heart..."
