I don't understand how a man can be so direspectful to the medium that made him rich. If it weren't for gaming he probably never would have gotten those zeros in his back account.

Just makes me glad I never bought Braid and though I know it's not going to happen I pray he never makes a dime as a game designer again.
Now, don't get me wrong, JoBlo is pretty pretentious, but he's not being "disrespectful of the medium" when he says most games are trying to be shitty action movies. That's not an unfair assessment of a lot of AAA titles.

Funny. In the past five years, two of my top five games in turn of fun were juvenile and silly.

I have absolutely no problem with that. Protip, Jon: Not everything has to be sooper serial, mmkay, but a game that isn't fun isn't much of a game. You might keep that in mind if you ever want to make another one, and skip navel-gazing art-house wankfest.

Is gaming just an entertainment medium? Or can it be an artistic medium as well? Where is the line between art and entertainment?
art can be entertaining, the two arnt mutually exclusive. but a game should be primarialy to entertain, if its artistic as well then thats even better but they shouldnt sacrafice entertainment to make it art

Oooo-kay.

I heartily agree with the "juvenile, silly and intellectually lazy" thing, but that article makes everyone involved come across as a complete knob.

Would you feel offended if i use this opportunity to shamelessly promote a game i like that its both FUN AND INTELLECTUALLY MADE OF AWESOME to prove that Blow-man is trying to not only trying to take down mainstream games but also other indie games by saying that indie only makes arty games and anything else is just as dumb as the mainstream ones?
Honestly, it would surprise me if Blow just said that outright.

It's weird, because Blow doesn't seem to understand why someone would someone would play Minecraft to build their own golden cock & balls. Or why someone would play a game like Madden, or even hop into a game of Call of Duty.

Maybe it's me, but something about his whole demeanor bothers me. It's like he wants to be this great thinker, writer, art guy in one; on the other hand, he's got paper yet he spent himself into deep debt with some game projects until Braid dropped and thinks his bank account number was a fictional number... despite being deep in debt before that. I see a guy who's so concerned with being gaming's Aristotle that he forgets certain real-world realities.

Braid was a good game, but not really that gameplay deep or that great. The ending's open interpretation was a nice thing though.

Strange, because he does have a point.

LOL. Someone who doesn't understand gaming is offering an opinion on it. Now where have we heard this before?

As artsy/wierd as J.Blow may be it was Taylor Clark who made him look like an total ass with his writing.
It really is odd that (almost) no one bashes this guy instead of Blow. You`re getting hung up on "Gaming is...juvenile, silly, and intellectually lazy" wich are the written words of T.Clark. Not that i`m defending Blow but it feels like everyone jumps on this without even reading. Clark states his personal opinions and there`s little to noone info about Blow besides a few talk quotes. The rest reads like made up stuff from the writers mind.

After seeing the vid posted by j_e_f_f_e_r_s Blow seems to be pretty normal. I imagined Blow in a room with this guy. It must have been scary to be followed by a madman (this wasn`t a interview) who hates games on one side and on the other has a hard on for you as a designer.

So Mr.Blow has decided that he's going to denounce the entirety of gaming as horribly juvenile merely because the AAA industry, an industry that essentially by definition cannot afford to take risks and panders to the broadest appeal possible is obsessed with guns and violence and sex. How about you stop over idealizing indie "art" games Mr.Blow? How about you realize that CoD (at least the 4th one) is just as artistic and powerful as any sort of indie game? How about you don't dismiss something because of its subject matter?

It seems more to me that Mr.Blow has a problem with mainstream consumers rather than AAA games. Him calling everything intellectually lazy and juvenile seems quite unnecessary, as if he's attacking the people who play them rather then the amazing high profile games that tons of expert people spend all day designing and making.

Of course Mr.Clark could just be trolling, as Mr.Blow has provided plenty of exceptional commentary without divulging into name calling.

Second.

Braid was a'right, nothing special.

Talk about an inflated sense of self worth.
To be fair, after a large chunk of the internet fellated him, who could blame him?

Not saying I AGREE with him...Just that his head got lodged in his rectum for a reason.

It's fun when people make something that they think is art and their ego inflates to the size of Pangaea.

Entertainment is juvenile and silly. That's a fundamental thing about it. Anyone who writes that off as inherently negative proves themself to be an idiot who thinks much more of themself then they really should.

And games are only intellectually lazy if you don't bother to think, something someone writing off an entire medium probably doesn't do very often.

There isn't one. If art doesn't entertain someone then why create it? And entertainment isn't just a pie to the face. Eliciting any emotional response is entertainment, since it captivated the audience.

Pretty much this.

Braid wasn't bad but I didn't like it. The problem is that this guy makes one good game and then feels like he can talk us all down. Wait, that sounds almost like-
