Not to mention the fact that Alienware is Dell.
I'm using a Dell Laptop. Are Alienware's good? Cuz if yes...I'll support Dell one more time.
If you're buying anything Alienware, you're paying an extra two grand for a glowing alien head. I'd say it's not worth it.

Try a smaller boutique store, like xoticpc. I got my Sager NP8660 there in 2008. It was on par with Alienware's more expensive 15" gaming laptop, except the Sager had a newer graphics card (9800m GT versus 8800m GTX - though it's actually an identical, or rebadged, card) and it has a much better cooling system.

You're better off buying an asus or sager (clevo) notebook. You'll get better performance and price, less pointless glowy LEDs.

I don't really have room for a stationary computer, so I use my laptop for gaming. Acer has several models with high-end hardware that are ridiculously cheap compared to their Alienware or Dell counterparts, and I've never run into any trouble with mine, so that's what I'd recommend. WoW will run smoothly on anything that isn't a netbook, so I don't really see why you would even concider spending vast amounts of cash on an Alienware machine for playing World of Warcraft, but that's completely up to you.

Edit: If you're worried about cooling, you can get one of those fans that you put your laptop on top of, or just something that increases the distance between the fan intake and your table/desk/lap.

Good thing I asked. Thanks.

You might want to ask around on http://forum.notebookreview.com/

These are the people who introduced me to Xoticpc. It's been almost two years since I bought my laptop, so I may be a bit out of the loop on what the different manufacturers and niche retailers are currently supplying. (My NP8660 still plays new games - like Mass Effect 2 - on their maximum settings! :D) If you tell them exactly what you need, I'm sure they could narrow down your search to whatever suits your needs.

Alienware and Dell are not one and the same. Saying Alienware is Dell is like saying a PC is a Mac. My machine is much higher quality in build and design compared to my moms Dell. Dell has rights to Alienware, they don't own them. Alienware computers are by no means shit out like Dells on that commercial.

"Gaming laptop" seems like kind of a contradiction to me--I prefer the sheer power and versatility a tower offers.

I'd opt for the m15x personally. You're playing games, so why induce eyestrain by cramming everything on a tiny screen?

Also, my recomendation is to get a desktop for gaming and a cheap laptop. A "good" gaming laptop commands a premium price but one used for simple day to day activities on campus can be had for a paultry sum. By contrast, a "good" gaming desktop (if you build it yourself - a task far less challenging than it may initially appear) can be built for around a thousand dollars. In this case, "good" simply means able to play all current games at maximum settings (thus allowing for a degree of future proofing). Also, consider the simple fact that there isn't much of an upgrade path for a laptop. When a desktop gets a bit long in the teeth a relatively inexpensive video card upgrade is often all that is necessary to squeeze a few more years of gaming out.

Personally i'm not on the "Lets hate Dell" bandwagon, I've never had a problem with mine. If you're looking into dell laptops I can reccomend the Studio XPS 16, I use it for the bits of gaming that I do, STO/L4D2/Red Alert 3 etc etc, and I can normally get most games at medium/high. Also it loosk great :D

Alienware literally is Dell.

Alienware is an American computer hardware company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dell, Inc.
You also can't compare a business machine (Dell Vostro) to a high end gaming one. They're both Dell computers, but they're aimed at different markets. I don't think Dell is shitty (even the Vostro has its fans), I've been drooling over their netbooks for quite a while. I'm just saying that if you want to buy an Alienware, you're betting off buying a computer with the same specs from somewhere else for half the cost and no glowy alien heads.

Again, I'll compare my 18 month old m15x to my moms studio 15. The only major issue I have had was the harddrive went bad, which can happen to any computer. Got a newer bigger one, problem solved. My mom has had 3 Studio 15s since she got it in November because they kept breaking or having problems before she ever touched it. Alienware may be owned by Dell, but the way the computers are made and handled are completely different.

And the lighting is bitchin'.

Nice job seeing my point.
