Poll: Geeky Tattoos

A couple of things.

It's not a matter of being a prude. Tattoos are for life (unless you get that expensive laser surgery), what you like now, you may not like in 20 or 30 years and you'll look back and wonder why the hell you did it.

This has always bugged me.

I have a tattoo of a Bass on my arm, which I got because.. Well.. I play Bass. In 30 years I may not play Bass, but that doesn't make my tattoo any less valid, I'll be able to look at it and think "Yeah, when I was 20 music was a really important part of my life." If OP gets a Foxhound Tattoo he will be able to look back and think how much this game meant to him when he was younger. Just because your tastes change doesn't mean you should regret what you used to be into.

My thoughts exactly. You're pretty much broadcasting "lower-class" to the world by getting a tat that's conspicuous. There's a good reason why people generally get tattoos that are easily concealed by even casual clothing, since you may not think so now, but a decade down the road when you're looking for a quality person to have kids with, your career prospects WILL matter even to the least gold-diggerish of girl.

Maybe in the 70's when only the roughest of people got tattoos, but dude.. This is 2011, tattoos are 300% less taboo. I am a big, big supporter of Tattoo acceptance in the workplace, and backwards thinking like this isn't helping at all. Its also a pretty shocking show of someones character if they are willing to judge a person so harshly because they have a few tattoos.

Keep in mind I'm a business major, accounting more specifically, quite possibly the stodgiest, most conservative of all professions, but one that pays very, very well. Tattoos may be less taboo in more occupations, but the truly high-paying jobs expect that crisp, professional appearance that a tattoo flat-out ruins, to the point where the business faculty makes a point of discouraging students from getting tattooed "for career reasons".

Your mileage may vary, but I know if I had a neck, wrist, or hand tattoo, I'd probably be literally costing myself tens of thousands of dollars a year.

Old mate of mine had the molecular structures of ethanol, nicotine and caffine on his forearm.

I've got the Map of the Universe on the back of my neck... art related but as it's the same image that EA based their old logo on (square, circle, triangle) some people confuse it for a game related tatt... or they say "Oh, a Playstation controller tatt. There's the square, the circle and the triangle but where is the X?" at which I respend "lemme just drop my pants and bend over to show you."

Which is why I singled out neck and wrist/hand tats specifically. I've known plenty of girls in business classes with tramp stamps (always eliciting the same "wow, totally not surprised" reaction from me, and if you met some of these girls you'd feel the same) and bro-culture frat boys with tribals on the bicep.

You can cover those, but covering, say, "THUG LIFE" over eight knuckles? Extreme example, but you know what I mean.

(this is leaving aside my personal, very low opinion of tattoos, but I've learned that's an unwinnable argument, like arguing religion with someone---nobody's changing anyone else's mind.)

When I get the money together, I am getting a tattoo of the words "Hello Sweetie" in Old High Gallifreyan on the back of my shoulder. There is a picture of it somewhere but I can't find it at the moment. My main issue is that I don't know where to go to get it done.
My local city has about 7 tattoo parlours and they all look the same to me :/

True. My best friend's mom knows a civil attorney or something along those lines who has full sleeve tattoos.

Which is exactly why I want to get a tattoo of Cthulhu. Though the one I have in mind is a wee bit out of my pricerange at the moment.

You can't have a "small" tattoo of the great Cthulhu, it has to be BIG and will probably take several sittings to get finished.

If youre really worried about how it will look in x amount of years just get it somwhere where it can be covered up relitivley easyly, all problems solved and youll like fine when your 80

Back of the neck isn't too hard to cover. My neck tatt is fairly small relative to my ex-rugby forward sized neck so I can do it with a standard shirt collar.

There was one accountant I knew who broke that rule of thumb. Had his whole face tattooed but he was a Maori with traditional moko and worked for some big international indigenous peoples' organisation so I don't really count him.

If you get a tattoo on your neck or anywhere visible all the time, you'll ruin your prospects for a decent job for the rest of your life, and I'd say that's a damn sight more important than getting something that looks cool. Plus, neck tattoos are for drug dealers and date rapists (no offense to those who do have a neck tattoo).

If you do get one, make it Foxhound, but keep it somewhere that can be concealed whilst wearing a t-shirt. Seriously, if you get it somewhere completely visible and uncoverable, the best job you'll be eligible for will be a barista at an independent coffee shop. Employers might not be able to legally discriminate, but they can sure as hell make judgement calls.

They can't discriminate but tattoo's can be banned in the company dress code.

Just like to point out that I'm not discoraging getting a tattoo, it's up to you OP I'm neither for or against it but I did want to point this out.
I work as a coach for a public school and wouldn't have my job if I had tattoo's visible when wearing shorts and a polo shirt.

Keep in mind this is coming from someone whose body is riddled with tattoos: I mostly agree. While we do live in a world that tattoos are less taboo, like you said in a later post, they are frowned upon in the business world. This may change when our generation or the next become the C.E.O.s, but as of now, visible tattoos are a death sentence in the business world. How do you think businesses in Japan and Dubai will feel about you if you have a skull on your neck?

OP: DO NOT GET ANY OF THESE TATTOOS. Or at least, don't get them visible. You WILL regret it. I liked Assassin's Creed 2. Does that mean I'm going to Ezio on my neck? Hell no! If I'm that inclined, maybe on my leg. You're 18. This is your first tattoo. You need to familiarize yourself with tattoos before you get bolder and bigger. You'll find yourself and your tattoo style. Just don't get one on the neck for your first. You probably (definitely) will regret it and you won't be able to cover it up. It's like instead of a first kiss on the playground, you got a BJ from Sally on the swings. Most shops either don't tattoo on the neck or below the wrist or have a policy that you need a certain amount in order to get one. There's a reason for this. They're professionals and know what a death sentence it can mean for certain people and for people who will regret it.

My geekiest tattoo is probably my favorite (not really, but I love it). I have "Kwisatz Haderach" tattooed in script on my upper lat.
