So most of you would be aware of the recent thread that asks for your sexuality. I saw this thread and thought 'Wow, there are a lot more bisexual people then I would have thought'[footnote]I'm not prejudiced, it was a non-discriminatory observation[/footnote] M question however, is more of an unofficial and inconclusive scientific survey. The purpose of this is to see if the different generations have different percentages of sexual orientations and if they match my beliefs.

EDIT: In case people wonder, I put 'other' for myself for two reasons:
1. I'm not sure yet.
2. I'm determined to keep the world guessing as to my orientation (a little game of mine)

I would imagine that the lower age bracket would have a greater percentage of bi and gay oriented people. This is, of course, partly because of the social prejudices against these sexual orientations being much stronger some years ago, but also because of the greater freedom and opportunity people have now to explore and test their sexuality. Whereas once a girl had to wait until some nice boy her parents approved of to ask her out, today there are many, many different ways a person can explore who they are and what they prefer sexually.

It will be interesting.

Under 35 and straight.

Y'know, you could've just gone & asked all ten people over 35 on here instead of making a thread.
Oh, come on. I'm sure there's more than 10. Perhaps 20?

OT: Dunno, under 35.
Gonna say Bisexual. But that's a simplistic way of putting it.
There are so few? Admittedly, I guess it's true that most people on this site are young, but if I made the age limit any lower it would defeat the entire purpose of this.

EDIT:

It wouldn't have worked anyway, you'd need the site to have an equal amount of people over and below 35.

Not really, it isn't a numerical comparison between age totals, it is a comparison within the constraints of the age limits ... though admittedly, with so few older members I probably won't get an accurate reading for them.

Under 35 and straight. I'm pretty sure I'm in the majority here, but who knows.

Demisexuality is a form of asexuality.
To be demisexual means you can't be sexually attracted to a person if you haven't been emotionally attracted to them for quite some time.
Or, at least, that's how I got it.

Oh, and we're about 3-4 asexuals on the site (that I know of), so no matter.
So basically you are asexual in that you choose not to have sex? And you are demisexual in that you have sexual urges as an extension of love felt towards someone? And yeah, sorry about forgetting asexuals, though admittedly I know who two of you are (though theother hasn't been on much lately)

In my area, there was a big wave of people claiming to be bisexual when they clearly weren't, and because of it I struggle to take it seriously when so many people claim to be.

Under 35, straight.

I think the reason you notice the generational thing is there really isn't many people here who are above 35. However, I do understand where you are coming from. I do think there is a generational difference in sexuality, mainly due to primary and early secondary socialisation teaching people that it's okay to like the same sex. While people above 35 are a lot less likely to align themselves as bisexual because they were socialised into "straight is right!". So they'll only accept that they enjoy the same sex, if that is all they enjoy.

This is pretty much my theory. You sir are quite insightful.

I'm bisexual because that's just what I'm interested in, I'm also under 35.
I can understand that the idea that there's a load of young people doing it as a fad, that's an easy idea, but at the same time, it seems rather insulting that people just going "yeah, I do this" for attention and to fit in.

I'm not bisexual because I want to fit in, I just like the way some women and men look.

My friend doesn't believe in being bi-curious, and this is why:
She says that it's impossible to like one gender but be interested in another, especially if you're currently in a relationship. She also thinks it's greedy to want both sexes as partners and that if you are sexually satisfied by one gender you won't like the other.

OT: Under 35 and straight (despite persuasion from my boyfriend).

While i think the poll might be flawed due to the vast majority of Escapists falling roughly between the ages of 16-20, i agree with the OP's point as was well-explained by Riobux.

Younger people are socalised in an enviroment were it's taught that it's ok to like members of the same sex. Older people were not and so are more likely to be straight.

However, i left high school about three years ago (aged 19 now) and i carn't imagine things have changed that much since i left. When i was in high school, being gay would have made you an outcast, and being bisexual...well i don't know, i only knew of one person whom claimed to be bisexual in my high school, and most people viewed him as a bit of an oddity. (He became a practising satanist, used to be dead popular too, but things went downhill for him.)

Perhaps my school was oddly conservative (which would be odd in itself because i went to a state-school), or maybe this bisexuality thing is happening in other parts of the country, or maybe they're all at it in America. But unless a lot has changed in the last three years then i would question just how univeral the claim that younger people are more open to alternative sexuality is.

Edit: OT: Under 35 and straight.
