With technology advancing so fast we have come to the point where we can alter our own children?s DNA to remove dangerous genetic conditions... However some clinics are now offering custom babies where the skin, eye or hair colour can be changed to the specifications of what ever the parents want. While this practice is limited, with advancing technology we will soon be able to custom a persons strength, intelligence and other aspects. But is this ethical? Vote on what you think and leave post on why you choose this decision. Oh and please respect others opinions, Thank you.

I did indeed search the forms before this... Search button and looking around... I didn't see anything so sorry if there is a thread like this somewhere.

Depends. If you give our baby something that drastically alters their physical shape, then I'm against it. However, if you give our children the ability to survive in sub-zero temperature with no clothing on, or the ability to paint while blind... then you have my support.

Ethical to create a race of supermen...hmm, don't know really. Why is it unethical?

I mean...yes, I don't like the idea of parents selectively aborting children in order to get the correct gender. However, if all this can be changed within the womb without harming the foetus, then what's the problem? Sure, from the cosmetic side it seems a little shallow, but who are we to deny this to our future children? Hey sorry you've Down's Syndrome kid, we could have prevented it but we thought it was unethical.

I mean...the word even implies that you're somehow doing something bad towards someone, making sure that your child is as perfect as they can be before they're born doesn't seem that way. One caveat to that though...messing with the grey matter. The moment you start putting in traits like docility or or focusing on the capacity for the various attractions. That's a big unethical nono, It's even something I could see parents doing in order to make their children follow only the paths they want and not the child's own.

Yup. And it still wasn't a bad idea there either. What was a bad idea was that the general population of the engineered people decided to take that as a cue to commence an almost racist stance towards those who weren't engineered.

And...that's a big problem, first and foremost, who do you think are the first people who are going to have access to advanced commercial genetic manipulation? Dun dun dun da! Rich people. And, as you know, rich people already think they have cause to think themselves better than their fellow man, due to being wealthy that is. Just think, with this stuff they'll think they've even more reason, and it'll be true.

If we lived in a post-scarcity society by then, it wouldn't really matter, as it stands we do not, and thus the have-nots remain, now even worse off than before.

You know what, with babies having the chance to be become supermen in the near future.. WHERE THE FUCK WAS MINE.

Not that I would use my new abilities to extinguish the human race...

This is truely the backside of technology, technology has done some extremely great things, but seriously, using technology to alter babies is just stupid, why?, because if we "improve" the human race so we live longer and healthier life, less people will die, and that might seem like a good thing, but no.

If we continue to improve the human race we'll be dooming us all in the process, seeing as there will never be enough food, starvation will become a world wide epedemic and we will all die in the end thanks to it, cause when the food becomes scarse, races die out, it's been happening for millions of years, i guess its our turn soon, only difference is that we will be the first race ever to actually doom ourselfs instead of being victims of evolution.

Mhm, except, this isn't about controlled breeding. This is about modifying the genotype and the genes of the foetus possibly while still in the womb. It wouldn't be getting people to pair off until you got desirable results, this is where you change aspects of the child before it's born, and trying to eliminate at the very least genetic traits that could result in a danger to the child.

As for the end of the world people. At the moment you don't have much to worry about, I already mentioned it but here it is in bold letters: POOR PEOPLE!. There's your control. As it is the rich are the ones who are going to be the first to benefit. I mean, think of all the advances in medicine we already have, and yet people still die. Just because you have a fancy new treatment doesn't mean the people who need it most are going to get it...so you can forget this whole the world is doomed no-one will ever die thing.

with that image came the fact that the baby is atatche to the mother through the umbilical cord, so if he could fly he would drag her around till she died

i present you the birth os superman
