You have probably played one already if you are PC gamer. And by term german games I dont mean just games made in Germany but most of german games I know are made there. Many people disliked this kind of games because they are usualy full of bugs and glitches. Others love them because of their modability and freedom they give you. By this I dont mean that they must be really buggy or have ton of mods but they usual have at least console which can be used for both, they appear kinda unstable or not that much scripted and they are mostly non-linear. Good examples of these games are Diggles: The Myth of the Fenris(console, graphic glitches, easily modifiable files), Sacred(console, glitches) , Gothic 1 & 2 (probably everything) and some others which I dont remember but I know I played more of them. If you understand what I mean and played one, whats your opinion on them?

I guess S.T.A.L.K.E.R. sorta falls under that category. I am a fair bit confused what you mean however.

I'm fairly sure it is, and that's not what I meant.

@your edit, that's not a german game, that's a german gamer. Unreal Tournament isn't german.

I've only heard of German games in terms of Board Games. Didn't know they had specific computer games too.

I never liked them - I prefer more oriented games. They have alot of potential, just insufficient resources.

I see where you are coming from. So let's not dwell on German games alone, but ask ourselves why games that are not tailored for the oversaturated English market seem to have a certain flair.

Allow me to raise 3 of my favorite examples. Games that are both popular and show a certain quality standard; yet manage to discern themselves from the swamp of mediocrity if you look at them closely. A subjective opinion here, folks. Don't lynch me.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R (Ukraine)

METRO 2033 (Russia)

The Witcher (Poland)

Now why is it that these games seem to stand at the sideline, yet shine so much? I'd say it's the last remnant of independence that the developers creating them have.
[sup](That, and a cultural difference--but that would be taking this too far, and I don't have the time to drag my experience with different nationalities and their productivity into this... unless someone really wants to know. Which I doubt.)[/sup]
Of course they still have to compete with a market that has been overrun with titles, but at the same time they are less prone to having a grand publisher breathing down their neck and telling them into what direction their game has to go.

However... the German market... Let's just... Let's just say I don't like the language very much. And they haven't really provided good subs into English.

The only recent German games I've played are Crysis ( + warhead) and Battleforge, and both of them are awesome. So yeah, guess I like German games then :p

*instant update* whoop, forgot that Anno 1701 was also German.

I always thought of them as Eastern European games. I like them. I like Silent Storm as well as the previously mentioned games. I would have liked Far Cry more if it weren't for the Trigen.

Painkill was made my People can Fly and they're Polish.

Crytek is indeed German even if they were founded by three Turkish guys.

Darkstar one is German I think. I never played it but I give the kudos from making a space combat game. I miss them deeply.
