[img_inline caption="I care so friggin' much!" align=right]http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/covergallery/img/2004/may212004_766_lg.jpg[/img_inline]Ok. I'm pretty sure that some of you will actually like - maybe even love - reality TV. As with my last rant, it's probably best of you skip to the last paragraph.

Dear Reality TV,

Reality TV, we need to talk. Back when you were young and unobtrusive, I was fine with you. But now, you're too clingy and attention-hungry, and I'm going to have to break off the relationship. I'm filing a restraining order.

Signed, Johnn.
I can safely assume that one or two of you will remember those days a long time ago where reality TV was actually good. You were able to empathise with and care about the subjects of the programmes, and the shows all had their own new and inventive formulae. But now, the pool has become as stagnant as the metaphorical cesspit that a disheartening proportion of the rest of television.

The dominating forces on TV right now are reality-based. "Big Brother", "The X Factor", "The Family"... Each one of these is reality TV shows, and each of them is advertised into oblivion. They are cheap to make, and rake in the money for the broadcasters. However, the broadcasters are the only people that benefit from this. The average person watching TV now has a limited viewing pool every evening.

Paradoxically, the shows that try to show normal people in everyday situations end up creating celebrities. We all know them - the people that are famous for being famous. From no personal merit or achievement, they are catapulted into stardom and make a huge living from the interviews and advertising contracts that they did nothing to deserve except for shouting on TV in Estuary English.

With "The X Factor" or "American Idol" or any other national version of the same dry show, you can place money on the winner having the Christmas No. 1 and collect your winnings. Many of the winners have one song as then fade into obscurity as soon as people realise that they only bought the song to justify all the money they spent on voting to keep them on their screens. Case in point: Will Young. He won "Pop Idol" and had a couple of hits, and now it is quite a surprise when people even remember who he is.

My defining memory of how hyped up people get over such pointless issues such as reality shows is when I walked through my local town and saw a newspaper stand in my village shop. The headlines on the broadsheet were all about the economic crisis, the trouble in the Middle East, or Labour's leadership woes. On the front page of the Sun, I was presented with the wondrous headline telling me that the final 12 of the X Factor had been revealed. "World Exclusive," the headline read. Well, the reason for that is probably because nobody else cares about such menial stories - except, of course, the other redtops.

So, I'm going to leave you with this. Do you think Reality TV is a waste of time and space, or is it an interesting and original genre? Please explain the reasons behind your opinion.

Yeah, Reality TV sucks. I used to watch a fair bit of TV, but then Big Brother and Australian Idol and all that rubbish started flooding the programme, so I stopped watching. Recently, I've started watching the ABC pretty regularly. They don't have ads, and most of the stuff they play is really, really good (documentaries, comedy, mini-series).

Have you got dance shows over in the UK? Over here people are going crazy for this Dancing with the Stars thing. No idea why. The judges are repulsive, and the stars aren't really stars. Last year one of them was the weatherman from the same network's morning show.

I admit, there are those few shows which are actualyl inventive. However, they are in the serious minority.

I'd rather watch paint dry than watch reality TV.

I do agree that when reality TV consisted of just documentaries and such it was ok, but now it's just cheap, simple shite. Something "new" being churned out every other week, giving pointless people their 15 minutes of fame [continue angry English man rant here - that's how little time I cba to spend on reality TV].

Has anyone else noticed that on things such as the X Factor or American Idol, the judges have no sway but still make comments on the performances regardless? Seems like vote swaying, if you ask me.

I take a certain amount of pride in never having heard of those last 2 shows in my entire life until this point.

I liked Hell's kitchen. Ok, I like seeing people getting yielded at by Gordon Ramsey.

I've watched it for a while then and I got bored. Thankfully, we have the change channel button.

Now I think that most things that are broadcast are pretty terrible, with the exception of a few sitcoms and comedy panel quiz shows, but reality TV "gets my goat" the most by far.

The first Big Brother can be half excused as a semi-legitimate social experiment, just to see how people would fare without any contact from the outside world for x number of days, but the point where you put a Portuguese lady-boy in to try and boost ratings by increasing the weird factor is a long way past the line.

All reality TV is at a point now where it has been done before so they just put the most retarded and obscure people in they can find, to try and attract idiotic viewers that would tune in because the albino could yell and throws a plate at a blind man. It's quite pathetic really. If I wanted to watch people sit about all day I'd put a webcam in the corner of my living room and occasionally text my brother telling him that he needs to leave the house and be interviewed by Davina McCall.

Even shows that promise glitz and glamour such as the Xfactor rarely deliver. Honestly can any one of you name two people that have won Pop Idol?

All reality TV should be stripped from the airwaves forever in favour of actually good programming, such as more Mock The Week or Top Gear. At least then I wouldn't have to listen to some moron associates of mine blab on about how "Mario is so stupid lololol but he's not gonna get evicted!" or whatever. They should cull everybody who applies for Big Brother.

You haven't heard of them? Then you are truly a lucky man.

Too true. I've felt this way for almost as long as reality tv has been around.

I don't know how to properly explain why I don't like it. You might as well ask why I don't like having my eyes raked out. But I hate it just as much.

I vote purge.

But the problem is not that reality TV sucks, I think it does, other people don't.

And THAT is the problem.

I watch Survivor, American Idol, and The Amazing Race every week.

I don't see anything wrong with them, nothing that warrants such an attitude against it. There is good reality and bad reality just like every other type of show. It's entertainment, and that's all it's supposed to be.
