console.

Have any here at the escapist ever played any of the Monster Hunter series? I thought they were really good providing you spent more than 10 hours on it. That was it's flaw, hard to get into.

E.g. played it for an hour on a coach, hated it.
Stepbrother got it, I watched him play, played it for ages, bought it the next day.

Anyway, I was just interested as to how many played/play it.

Chuckle at the thread title.

Anyway, I've never played one, though they look cool, and I'm trying to get PSP games at the moment, so I might buy into it. Any particular title I should start with?

Umm, i don't know really, they're definately worth buying, seen as if you get into it, its a very long game (if repetitive >.>) but you should start with Monster Hunter Freedom 2. Monster hunter freedom is just the psp version, number 2 is kinda like an expansion, with a lot of the old stuff in, so yeah, get MHF2. It's best played with friends though :)

EDIT: And yeah, the title was "Custom Built" to draw in the largest internet crowd possible.

lol.

I've never played the PS2 one, but I heard that it was quite hard to play, with the controls.

I have played it all on my own.
Got to the Ralthos on 4 stars.
Keep dieing.
Every time.
Came damn close once too, until it got enraged.
I had to hit it one more time with my Greater Serpentblade.
(The greatsword made out of the large Dromeosaurs. You know the boss ones.)
Cuts its tail off too.
Which was VERY hard to do on my own...

Method for the Rathalos,

Wait till it turns slowly, hit in face twice whilst it fireballs, run away....wash rinse and repeat. Once you learn its attack pattern, you learn how to do pretty much every other creature, look for its open times, then exploit em. True on the tail being harder to cut off on your own, i just use a flash bomb and slice away. I died to the point of frustration using a Greatsword on the rathalos, but after i learned the tactics and uses a sword and shield instead, the game became fun again :)

Failing that, spam flash bombs.

People! Buy the game, it's worth it for the amount of time you can get out of it!

XD

I had the first one for the ps2. Loved it. I have a wii and can't wait for 3/tri. I've also played the japanese version of 2. Had to have my friend tell me how to play the game. Couldnt tell what The items were. But its my favorite game series. The main thing I like about the gam is that the system of play doesn't involve leveling. Meaning you can be just as good as another player even if their gear is a little better gear. Thus there is no level requirement for gear. You don't need spend hours trying to reach a certain skill level. You just go out and kill monsters and then you use the certain parts of the monster to make new weapons and armor. You can also do things like fish, cook and mining. The game plays by combining rpg elements with hack and slash play. You can switch between gunner or blade-master throughout the game as you please. And you'll find that one is more suited for different quests than others. Or your someone who can play the game simply by playing as one granted each having their own set of armor. The only drawback is that there is no option to simply "go out" and kill monsters in one open area. There are several large terrains or maps to be found in each monster hunter game. To visit these areas, you must accept a quest that must be completed in this area. Each quest has a time limit (trust me. You'll never worry about it). You start off fighting small deer-like creatures in the beginning and then as you progress, you work your way up to raptor-like creatures and then eventually dragon (or wyverns as they're called in the game). Each time you complete a quest, you will get a set of rewards based on the difficulty of the quest. Usually these reward are certain monster components or minor equipment, or sometimes even reagents to help you make things that will help you in the making of things that will aid you while you are playing such as sonic bombs and potions and ammunition for crossbows. Its a fun game and I liked it. You should check it out.

Oh yeah Monster hunter is a great game. My brother and I played this together forever. Pretty much until I got into wow. It's an actual representation of what would happen if you fought a dragon. It will run you over.

I had some monster hunter game on the gameboy color or advance or something when I was a kid; I didn't like it very much because the fights were card-based and took a very, very long time - a single fight took, if I recall correctly, 10 or 20 minutes, or maybe even longer.

It looked kind of dumb to me. And it doesn't help that they have real life people try and portray a game that's serious.
