Whichever one annoys Michael Atkinson more. However, I'm sure he'll be "horrified" by both.

Seriously though; Depends on the art style of the game. If realism is the goal, I'd go to dismemberment; however if there's a less realistic emphasis (eg Team Fortress 2), gibbing is often more comical, so I'd go for that.

Both. Like left for Dead 2, which is also both for those that are arguing it. In L4D2, melee weapons dismember whatever limb you happened to hit (my favorite beingutting both their legs off simultaneosly) but the chainsaw, the Pipebomb, the grenade launcher gib. Mounted turret may as well, but I never use it.

I would love a game that actually felt like you were shooting flesh and had proper dynamic dismemberment. When you shoot something fleshy it should make a thud and thwip and cause holes to appear. I mean if in real life you shot someone with a shotgun up close the damage would be massive. Holes everywhere and limbs torn to shreds.

Left 4 Dead sort of got it right, but it feels like your shooting paper when you hit a zombie. I want weighty enemies.

If there is gibbing involved, I'm too close to my foes.

I prefer to glass the planet from orbit.

but isn't dismemberment a more advanced form of gibbing?

I prefere combination myself. Left 4 Dead 2 wouldn't be as fun if you couldn't shoot off zombie limbs and then blow them into little chunks with a pipe bomb. Hell, most of the time their entire bodies just turn into a red mist.

that was entertainiing for awhile, but seeing a mans arms and legs explode from a shot to the torso got annoying. Besides I felt bad, Isaac Neuton was doing complete backflips in his grave.

It's all about the weapon I'm using. I prefer some sort of realism to the gore in my video-games. If I'm using a plasma-cutter, I would like dismemberment. If I'm using a rocket launcher, I would like Gibs.
