Poll: Gimped or nerfed?

I have only heard one person used the term "gimp" and that was that random dev for BO say they gimped quickscope. When did this whole gimp thing start?

I think are both perfectly acceptable, and can also tell you what kind of games a person enjoys.
In my experience, people who say "Gimped" are primarily FPS players who don't branch out much, and people who say "Nerfed" have a greater variety of games they enjoy.

Really? I've never heard the word gimped on the TF2 SPUF. I mean I only play shooters and I've barely heard the word gimp used in this context, although admittedly most of that shooter-time goes into tf2.

Although I do play Pardus(space MMO) in which the players whine about balance all the time and I haven't seen the word gimp.

Actually, I heard the term "gimp" thrown around by a group of friends in my high school as the name that they called the girl with the crutches. It's possible that it's gained another meaning. Doesn't matter to me though. I use "nerf" all the time.

I think I used to have some different definitions between the two, but I never stopped and thought about the use of the word gimp. Now that I think about how offensive that is, I am going to have to try and take that out of my vocabulary.

I dunno what the proper term is, but I always say 'nerfed'. mostly cause it sounds right. and 'gimped' reminds me of my first boyfriend, which isn't cool. lol

Different terms. Gimp means made useless in regard to everything else, nerf is made weaker.

Nerfed should be for when something was overpowered but was pared down for balance reasons. Gimped might be for when that's overdone and it's flaws overtake it's now weakened benefits. Though over-nerfed would work better and avoid unnecessary mental images.

Nerfed, and assuming I know what I'm talking about, the origin of the term came from Nerf guns, which are scaled down versions of airsoft/paintball guns, which are essentially scaled down versions of real guns which are NOT fun to play with.

So basically Nerf means to make something unusable or ineffective in any given scenario.

I always just used the term nerf. Though sometimes urf, bit of an in joke there. Either way, never heard anyone say gimped. Plus gimp can refer to more than just balance....

I use neither. In general, if something gets worse, I usually use some sort of expletive.

Ex: *Playing God of War: Ghost of Sparta*
*Low on health, last remaining enemies almost gone*
*Those flipping armored cyclopes come into play, trollfaces and all*
"FUCK MY EAR." (Or something equally obscene or odd.)

I've never used "nerf" or "gimp." Nerf just reminds me of the toy, and gimp just reminds me of the software.

I don't quite think you understand the context of the use.

It's not about the situation becoming worse but the object/character in question.

For instance, Siege tanks have been nerfed in a past patch of Starcraft 2. They went from 50 damage to 36.
That's a nerf.

Gimping is what they did to quick scoping in Black Ops, you have to wait a few seconds before you can fire an hit the target.
Aim quick as you like, you still won't hit anything.

Either way, I use them both and it doesn't matter how you use them. Unless you're so picky about things.

Nerfed makes more sense, you're making something as effective as a nerf gun.
