I think if a country can make blonde jokes illegal they can do something about the borderline discrimination that it is in certain situations. As well as that from what I have seen the men tend to get it much worse than the women but that is from my own observation. Everytime a thread about this pops up on the Escapist you can see that double standard quite well. You only ever get pictures of hot ginger women and never a single hot ginger man.

Lol at people calling it a form of racism.. Yes they are their own race.. THEY COME FROM THE RED PLANET ITSELF MARS AND ARE RULED BY THE GIANT GINGER KING KNOWN AS THE GINGER BREAD MAN!!!
No Its not a good thing and the name calling can really effect people... I mean just look at this guy.

But I dont condone any sort of name calling I was a fatty boomstick when I was young until I learnt the wonders of getting off my fat ass and going to the gym.
But Gingers cant really " fix " their problem.
Are Gingers classified as a race the same way mongoloids and dwarfs are?
Well if you really want to go back as many others have said and I wouldn't even think to mention it as it is quite obvious the abuse in the UK could easily stem from when England was run by a bunch arrogant pricks that want to spread their "superior" culture everywhere and picked on the classic Celtic(100% sure this was an Irish and Scottish Celt trait not sure on other tribes) trait of red hair. So to a small degree if you really want to get technical and turn back the clock it could be considered racism. This is why I don't consider what goes on in Northern Ireland religious as it is fuck all to do with religion really it just became an easy way to tell as people for GB were mainly Protestants due to King killing everyone not to convert or something along those lines and the Irish were Catholic.

Actual hate based on something like that is silly and immature.

I'd like to think that most times people do shout abuse at those with ginger or red hair it's just a joke (often one that's gone too far, though). I may just be underestimating people's prejudices though.

Appropriate.
Anyway, it's not racism no. It's also really not something that should affect you. Most people will get insulted or picked on for something. I frequently get remarks about my long hair, from people I don't know. Ignore them, or respond intelligently and politely, just to mess with them.
As for randoms yelling at you, who the fuck cares? It could be in jest, or maybe they really are that annoying. Either way, what does it matter?
I did say it's a problem, but it's not really a big one. Just develop a thick skin or something.
I've made fun of one ginger. Friend of mine, she dyed her hair. I only mention this cause it was hilarious, she actually looked pretty good with orange, and then red hair.

I'm ginger, and I never got bullied for it, but I'm from Ireland, and about 1 in 4 of us are ginger here, (Thank you Vikings). I simply don't care about name calling or teasing, but I would get angry if someone did try and discriminate against me because of my hair colour though, but I've never experienced that.

Gender
Whatever, just wash your hands.
I think that it comes down to people really wanting to be racist to minorities but its not ok to hate someone based on skin color but its more ok to hate a white person for hair color and red heads are pretty much as minority as you can get

Looking back at it now it was always there a little to I remember when I was in elemenry some kid asked me if the carpets match the draps (I didnt understand at the time) but I mean really why does it matter >.> why are people asking me about my crotch...

I don't make fun of them. I adore the female part and ignore the male part.

Besides, nobody wants a Cartman of some sort to come and decide that Gingerus Superior is the only race to walk the Earth and kill everyone else.

...Then again it might be my copper beard speaking through me.

Its very annoying, i was picked on in school for my red hair, until i got bigger & meaner than everyone else. But still i've never had a problem with violence towards me, but i've had plenty of insults thrown my way. Most of the redhead hate is aimed at men, thats very obvious.

I have noticed a few good things about the red hair though, most of the ladies i know love my hair & i'm damn near impossible to lose in a crowd.

My friends in high school called me Flame(kinda lame i know), but things like that are fine between friends. Very few non "gingers" will ever understand, but it is an issue. Will it ever be better, probably not, so most of us will just deal with it until we get really pissed off.

Ginger here.

I got picked on, but it never really bothered me. However I can see how it may be hard on those with serious self esteem issues but I just ignored and got along with my life, or had a laugh at how petty it is.

As to why I have no idea ... perhaps it's because we're different.

I know that anyone who is different gets picked on at times, but is this really worth claiming the same validation as women, homosexuals and ethnic minorities? I doubt you have to "wake up everyday and fight the world," as Margaret Cho says. I know that belligerence/bullying can get to you, but I don't think this is the appropriate response; I don't think it's an effective response.

Seriously, being made fun of for something as innocuous as red hair? I personally Lllllove women with red hair, and there are plenty of girls out there who have an affinity for redheaded men. Why not make fun of yourself, and take away the ammunition these bullies are using? It's not very effective to mock someone who has enough sense of humor to mock himself. Besides, if you have any real sense of humor you're probably light years beyond these bullies anyway. Making others laugh intentionally is the fastest way out of this victimization.

Also, I do not at all think you're being bullied because of your red hair. I think you're being bullied because in the simple minds of your tormentors you're an easy target. If these turds really think that the color of your hair is worthy of a joke, then they can be outwitted rather easily. Hell, they may even kick your ass (I have no idea how big you are), but what everyone will remember is that you had them all laughing at the brutes and the only response they could come up with was to answer with their fists.

I never noticed any insults or violence towards redheads here...

I thought the only downside of being ginger is that everyone wants to sleep with your daughter, honestly.

(Actually, there were few guys with red hair at my school, but the ones that did have red hair were usually fairly popular...(
