i was a very sick kid. i gave a LOT of my blood to medical science when i was younger. now needles freak me out a little

But seriously, I can understand your frustration. You just want to help people. I don't like the labeling of homosexuals as "high-risk" because it feels too close to "degenerate" which makes me want to scream.

I have a common bloodtype, A-. But I think we're supposed to donate blood during military service. No sweat, needles don't bother me, and if someone may need my blood I'd be happy to help.

Turned 17 two days ago, so I decided to give blood today.Anyways me and my friend walked down to the center I went in we both registered and i got called in first. Anyways upon being told it wouldn't take to long to get rid of a pint of blood for me, i challenged my friend to a race. Anyway I got a time of 4 min 17 seconds. He clocked a time of over 8 minutes. (He felt woozey half way through.)So does anyone else have a story or a time about giving blood?

I don't know how the system is in the USA most likely different as you get paid for it, you lucky bastards.

Congrats!!! I give blood as often as I can, ever since I turned 17. Here in the US, there are some places that pay you for it, but I usually just goto the Red Cross locations to do it for free. I also have a pretty funny story about giving blood.

I was 18, and I was giving at a Red Cross event sponsored by my high school. After I finished giving blood, I went to the recovery area and was eating cookies, drinking juice, and chatting with my friends. There was a girl who had just turned 17 and gave blood for the first time. She said she felt fine and she joined our conversation. As we were all talking, she all of a sudden passed out and fell face first into my lap. We called for a nurse as quick as we could, and I helped her over to a collapsable bed. When I got back to my table, we all shared a pretty good laugh as that was as much as I had "gotten" in quite some time Needless to say, she was a little to embarassed to sign my yearbook that year...

I haven't yet; I plan to, but so far I haven't been around when there's been a blood drive, and I just haven't thought to plan to do so. Maybe I'll do it over the Christmas break.

Uhh, what country do you live in that prohibits giving blood because you're gay? Sounds messed up to me. I've never heard of that...ever.

It's universal; men who have engaged in sexual activity with another man since 1980 (or something like that) cannot give blood because of their high risk of having HIV. It sounds like a pretty awful, discriminatory rule, but honestly, it's based on solid science. A defense for the rule written by the English NHC explained that getting rid of this rule would increase the risk of introducing HIV+ blood into the system by 160%.

It's almost like buying insurance... There's going to be a time when I need blood, so I should give some to the system. Kinda like with insurance, you pay up so you can get saved later but it's probably not going to be your money that eventually saves you. Not a perfect metaphor, but that's the way I like to see it. By saving others you're kinda saving yourself.

I've given blood a couple times before, and I should do it more often. One time my friend and I went to donate on our lunch break from work and ended up being like 2 hours late, lol. Our boss was pissed but then we guilt-tripped him about giving us crap for a good deed.

Uhh, what country do you live in that prohibits giving blood because you're gay? Sounds messed up to me. I've never heard of that...ever.

In Sweden you can't donate blood if you, beeing male, have had "sexual intercourse with another man", and apparently the same goes for the UK.

I've been donating blood since the age of 18. Haven't had any probs with it except from one time when i passed out. Felt pretty lame afterwards but then again, I've got low blood pressure and it was stupid to start running around as soon as the needle left the arm.

I can't give blood, I have some kind of condition originating in the Caribbean/Mediterranean that means I can't reproduce with people with the same condition...or something like that. I need to ask the doctor what it even does. o.o;

But yeah, I don't wanna bug anyone with my own shortcomings. I would give blood if I could and it was really needed, though, even though I hate hate hate needles.

They pulled it out? As in, you saw your vein outside your body? Messed up. How'd that happen?

Here in Canada, the age for donating blood is 16. Donating blood has made up a good chunk of the 40 Community Service hours I needed to graduate High School.

40 HOURS? Wow, and I thought my school was bad... (20 hours for us)
But back to the subject at hand, I haven't given blood, although I heard it's a great feeling experience.

After some incidents when I was younger I figure I owe a couple pints here and there to the cause.

A funny story would be a friend of mine ragging on about how manly he was and getting the whole way through the procedure flirting with the nurses and what not before fainting at the sight of a drop of blood on his arm.

I've no idea why he wasn't tripping out over the bags but there it is.

Needless to say he doesn't give blood any more and we give him hell all the time.
