I never really saw the difference there's the same amount of liquid in the glass right? I use the two interchangeably and sometimes get annoyed when people insist on using "half-full."

The answer is simple: It depends on the state of the liquid in the glass. If you are filling it and stop half way then it is half full. If you are emptying the glass and stop half way then it is half empty.
