Poll: GOG and Steam.

I would say use both as everyone has already pointed out, GOG is good for older games at cheaper prices, but their selection on newer titles is limited. Steam has a pretty vast library and their weekend sales almost always have something that interests me. You will most likely have to call your bank after your first GOG purchase though as they are based in Poland or somewhere in that area of the world and your bank will most likely decline the charge. It's a quick 5 minute phone call fix and just tell them what the site is and that you'd like future charges to go unhindered.

It's simple really: if a game sold on Steam is also available on GOG, don't get it from Steam.

I never go to GOG. I mostly stick to Steam (sales) and Direct2Drive (coupon codes).

As a gamer you pretty much owe GOG at least a fraction of your business. They are doing everything that we spend all our time whinging for on internet forums. Steam is ok but never forget that you ARE buying games with DRM and you WILL have to crack them when your rental expires. Direct 2 Drive will lock you out of your games at the first chance it gets. Those guys owe me.

The primary function of all DRM is to make sure that you don't buy games, only rent them. Sooner or later the mechanism by which you legitimately circumvent your DRM will be unavailable or obsolete and at that point you will lose access to the data you thought you bought. This is why historians and scientists tend to despise it so much. Steam is one of the best of the bunch in that they are open about what they are doing but on more than one occasion I have been blocked from playing one of my games because steam wanted to update it and I was offline or some bullshit. GOG will never do that to you and GOG's verification servers will never fade from existence and take your games with them because it doesn't have any in the first place.

LOL, scientists! So if you buy a new game from GOG that has drm, gog removes the drm? Other then that I don't think Valve is going anywhere so thats a theoretical concern at best. Whats to stop them from (if they did fade) from updating steam one last time to unlock all verification? Nothing.

Oh well. I will check gog from now on and whoevers cheapest/has the game is getting my business. I do like steams auto patching though, I guess its a tradeoff.

Steam sales are unbelievably cheap, so I usually just hang about it like a vulture waiting for a title I want to get a price cut. Never been to GOG, but I may look into it now. So if for nothing else, this thread is good for spreading the word about it.

I personally am not a fan of Steam as I tend to play games offline or am not able to use the internet. I have never before heard of Good Old Games, but I shall definitely check it out. It's all a matter of opinion.

Am I just playing games that happen to work offline? Because I have never had a problem with steam and I play games all the time offline, never had a problem. Start in offline mode, play game. It ALWAYS works for me. Am I just lucky? Because I have heard this complaint about steam and its never affected me.

Well, I am happy for you, good sir, I personally am not a fan of Steam. I have tried several times in the past to play games offline, unsuccessfully, and I just play other games.

You have to go with both... they compliment one another and they don't seem to duplicate one another in their libraries.

There are lots of fantastic deals on steam as well as new titles. But GoG do older games that steam often doesn't have which are brilliant to have again.

Steam also has the advantage with its client, as a lot of people have it on PC nowadays and it makes communicating with other people as well as in game grouping with friends for games that have MP easy as hell.

Well yeah I believe you. I just want to know if its specific games that do this, or if steams not updated properly like someone said above? If its specific games is there a list, because I will avoid getting those games on steam if thats the case.

Why can't you use both? As others haves said, GOG stands for "Good Old Games", so they tend to sell games that are on the older side. Steam sells newer games and older games. Games also tend to be really cheap on GOG (think 6-10$ usually), but Steam has periodic sales that drain wallets. Just join both and have a great time!

GOG version will be optimized to run on newer OSes, Steam gives no such assurance (READ: No guarantee of working). So if both stores carry the same game, I tend to opt for the GOG version.
